UrZah

In the film The Dark Crystal, urZah is the Ritual Guardian of the urRu race. The urRu are a calm and gentle race, contrasted in the film with their alter egos, the flamboyant Skeksis. Like the other urRu, urZah is slow to move and slow to speak, although the companion book to the film, World of the Dark Crystal, says that he spoke in riddles more freely than the others.
UrZah brushes and combs colored sands into spirals which represent the complex numerology of his home planet. When a sand painting is nearly completed, he brushes it away with his tail, akin to the destruction of complex sand paintings by Buddhist monks in real life. Spirals are present all over urZah's body, as the urRu develop "thought spirals" much like human wrinkles, through years of thought.
UrZah's alter ego was skekZok the Ritual Master. While UrZah's rituals seem to be based on Tibetan and Zen Buddhism, the rituals of skekZok more resemble Orthodox Christianity and medieval sorcery.
