[edit] Reformatting this article
I have reformatted this article to align with the other Chola bio pages I have done. I have kept most of the information from the original article in tact apart from minor copyedits.
I have rewritten thr following paragraph to remove inserts from pupular fiction and kept the matter purely historical: He succeeded his cousin Parantaka Chola II as the Chola king under dramatic circumstances. When Aditya Karikalan, the eldest son of Parantaka Chola II was all set to succeed his father as the king of Cholas, he was assassinated in a place called Kadambur. Soon, Parantaka Chola II was dead, and the kingdom was in chaos. Popular opinion was to give the throne to Rajaraja Chola I, but Rajaraja sacrificed the throne to in favour of his uncle Uththama Chola as Uththama was the elder than himself, and also as Uththama was the son of Kandarathitha Chola, who ruled the Chola kingdom from 950 to 957.
It is not know where Aditya II was killed.

sir , The silver coin is showing here Uttam Chola but being a bengaly i am telling that it is bengaly writing , the name is written on this coin as 'UTTAM BALA' , IT IS BENGALY INSCRIPTION .
BALA are belongs to NAMASUDRA community in bengal ,
that is DRAVIDIAN origin .in my office lots of bala are there . Uttam is very popular name still in bengal . The COIN belongs to any bengaly king not chola ,or the cholas are originally bengaly sudra community ( i am not the person to say so ) You are earnetly requested to consult the mater with renouned bengaly "AMARTYA SEN " nobel in economices . the coin showing here is a BENGALY inscription .it is writen as "UTTAM BALA" in distinct bengaly alphabet . it is "UTTAN BALA" not "UTTAN CHOLA". Please verify the matter . i am surprise tom see coin of begaly from cylon .
- It was common for the Chola kings to issue coins with devanagri scripts. See lakdiva.org.

This is a well understood coin of Uttama Chola and not a Bengali coin. During this time of the coin, there was no Bengali influence in Illam. Further, the clear depiction of the fish (Pandya) and bow (Chera) on the coin shows that it is chola anscestry who had control over both dominions.

The text calls him "Uttama". Somewhere it should explain why the page name is different. Or maybe the page needs to be moved to Uttama Chola. Robin Patterson 13:11, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
