The Val Jean was a Maquis raider starship in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager operating during the 2370s. The Val Jean was seen in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Caretaker".
The ship's name was revealed on a computer readout screen in "Repression".
In 2371, the ship was being pursued by the Cardassian warship Vetar; the ship's commander, Chakotay, took the Val Jean into the Badlands in an attempt to escape from the Vetar.
The ship was scanned by a coherent tetryon beam and brought into the Delta Quadrant by a lifeform known as the Caretaker. The USS Voyager was ordered to find, and capture, the Val Jean.
In the Delta Quadrant, one crewmember from both vessels were abducted by the Caretaker. The crewmember from the Val Jean was B'Elanna Torres, and the Voyager crewman was Ensign Harry Kim. In order to find the two crewmembers, the Voyager and Val Jean reluctantly assisted each other.
The Voyager and the Val Jean were outgunned in a dog fight with a small fleet of Kazon-Ogla vessels. Chakotay chose to do a ramming maneuver on the largest ship of this fleet, and destroyed it by doing so. Chakotay was beamed on-board the Voyager and received a temporary Starfleet commission along with the rest of his crew.
The two crews worked together, and eventually brought Voyager back to Earth. (VOY: "Caretaker")
