Valle Castellana

Valle Castellana is a town and a commune of about 1.277 residents in the Province of Teramo of eastern Italy. It is a member of the Italian community of surrounding mountain villages, Monti della Laga.

Running through the communal area of Valle Castellana is the Castellana River which travels in a northerly direction towards Ascoli Piceno, a town in the Italian Marche Region. From here it joins the Tronto River before eventually leading out to the Adriatic Sea. In the past this waterway was also known as Verde.
Some literary scholars have put forth the hypothesis that the Castellano River is the same "fiume Verde" (Verde River) where Manfred of Sicily claims to have been buried in the Divine Comedy of Dante. In effect, the Castellana River basin, along with the Montagna dei Fiori formed the northern most portion of the Kingdom of Naples while to the north lie the Papal States. This area still serves as a demarcation point for the commune of Valle Castellana.

On 25 May 2002 the the finish of the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2002 took place near Valle Castellan in the small village of San Giacomo located on the slopes of the Montagna dei Fiori. The victor was the Mexican Julio Perez Cuapio.
