VAMBUDO MODERN MARTIAL ARTS STYLE
Vambudo is a mixed martial arts style founded in 1993 by Soke Mike Vamplew in the United Kingdom, after Soke Vamplew had trained in many martial arts styles. Vambudo encompasses techniques from over 15 different martial arts styles with the philosophy being that of relaxed movements and fluidity of technique until the point of contact.
The style trains in 5 ranges of martial combat those being Kicking, Trapping, Striking, Grappling and Groundfighting combining a high degree of fitness and stamina to employ the techniques. Sparring is conducted through Semi Contact and Light Continuous and their own Vambudo Open Rules (which allows kicking, striking, grappling and groundfighting). There are no formal katas, and basic stickfighting techniques are also taught along with basic bokken skills through the senior grades.
Grades work as with many styles in coloured sashes, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, red, brown, brown 1st stripe, brown with black stripe, black sash.
The first club teaching the style was founded in Portsmouth, United Kingdom in January 1996 with several further UK clubs being founded and continually teaching the style.
Vambudo has exported to other countries and is currently taught in Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Iran, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
