Vernon Field (comics)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vernon Field is a fictional character in the Batman maxi-series Batman: The Long Halloween. He is important in the series as he is indirectly responsible for Harvey Dent's transformation into Two-Face.
[edit] History
Vernon is a harmless-looking man who appears to be meek and unassuming. In reality, however, he is cunning and extremely corrupt, a tool of Gotham City's gangsters.
He is hired by Sal Maroni for information on Harvey Dent. Field informs Dent about the possibility of Bruce Wayne working with Carmine Falcone. He also tells Maroni about Dent's suspicions that Maroni may be Holiday, the serial killer who has been killing members of the Falcones and Maronis on holidays.
Later, Field gives Maroni antacid (it is implied that Field knew Maroni would scar Dent), which the mobster then sprays Dent with, triggering his descent into madness as Two-Face.
A few months later, Two-Face arrives at his former office where Field is working late at night (Two-Face has just killed Carmine Falcone). Two-Face has figured out that Field slipped Maroni the acid, and flips a coin to decide whether or not kill Field. The coin lands with the scarred face up, and Dent kills Field with two shots to the head, the final victim of the Holiday killings.
