[edit] Meeting
Does anyone feel the need to have a meeting about this project through irc. I wouldn't mind talking for a meeting, err typing. I thought we could use the wikipedia 1.0 channel. Its on the Version 1.0 editorial team. I'm there right now, until they kick me off. I am 'nominaladversary' Nominaladversary 04:32, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Version 0.5 update
Just thought I'd keep you abreast of developments at Wikipedia:Version 0.5. Linterweb, a French company, is planning to release 2000-10000 CDs during January. It was delayed a little in order to hire a developer, but he has now started work. The CD will include a search engine and a set of navigational pages (some of these are ready). I believe everything (including the software) will be available for the free download under GFDL. Will you be able to set up for a January release via the BitTorrent network? Thanks, and Happy New Year, Walkerma 05:17, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- ER, the software will be GFDL? Was that a mis-statement on your part or are they really going to release software under a license written specifically for software documentation? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 19:40, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, that's probably my mistake (I don't really follow the copyright laws very well), but my understanding is that the software can be freely included with the distribution. I'll check up on the details. Walkerma 06:04, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, just making sure. GPL is probably the appropriate license for the software itself. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 16:13, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, it's GPL, I confirmed it. Walkerma 19:58, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- Linterweb isn't going to bundle anything are they?
- Sorry, for not answering your inquiries, yes we can get started on the 0.5 release right away. And thank you for the update as well as the good news of the CD release.Nominaladversary 23:25, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
- The release is being held up at the moment (things beyond our control), but we are getting closer to publication. We will be able to include the reader in with the download, as far as I understand - that was a big reason for working with a small French software company. I'd guess now at a February CD release (with downloading available shortly afterwards), but I can't be sure. I'll let people here know as soon as we are ready. Walkerma 04:36, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- The release is tentatively scheduled for March 26. I'll try to keep you posted with download information. Walkerma 06:32, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

(unindent)I'm still very ichy to get a torrent going for it ASAP or exactly on the date (now April 3rd?) so that if the site gets slammed by digg or something it'll still have a solid download link. while leeching/seeding is not new to me, actually establishing a torrent is; is this ready to go or is there anyway i can help? JoeSmack Talk 20:16, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Contact User:Kelson - he is organising the start of seeding, I believe. He understands English well. He did the image files, dumps and cleanup of Version 0.5 for us, and I think may even have a server he is getting ready for Torrent. You're right, it is most likely Tuesday, April 3rd before we can start. Thanks, Walkerma 03:26, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

- (his reply from here). Hi Joe, Linterweb will provide the v0.5 iso over HTTP or FTP, and searchs good mirrors over the world to enforce the network architecture. So you will be free to download the iso just after the release... for this reason I think it will be easy for you to start to share it quickly over BT. Best regards. - Here we go, download links. I'm thinking mininova for the seed? Lots of options though. JoeSmack Talk 20:21, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well, we'll need to update the front page, but first lets make the subpage with all of the info, and check up on the torrent. I'm downloading the files, and will make multiple torrents to see which trackers work. If you guys have any torrents that are perfect, post them.Nominaladversary 00:44, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- First attempt, 1 tracker (bz2 and the non compressed iso I'll try to leave azureus on all night. Nominaladversary 02:44, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

- First attempt update: Well, we have about 2-3 different uploaders and about 9 different leechers. Both torrents are working at my end. Both torrents are at thepiratebay as well. here and here. If anyone has an ED2K client, he/she is already providing support for the release on the ed2k network. Albeit all intentions are good, the BitTorrent side of the release is more important. If you have both types of clients open, well even better. Nominaladversary 13:16, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

- I believe User:X1987x uploaded the other torrent slightly earlier. The date on it is a month in advance (on accident), but it has seeds. There is a little more info on my and his talk page, but im a little more for the one with better info. I'll try seeding both until we decide what to do. JoeSmack Talk 04:32, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] When 0.5 gets released
Will the members of this project get notified before the torrent is made public so we have time to download the CD before everyone else, or will we just join the swarm and hope for the best? I think we should get notified, because that should increase the download speed for everyone.
A possible way to do this would be to create a torrent which is made available to us, but not any major torrent indexes. After we've all downloaded the files, we can submit the torrent to the index sites. Ultra-Loser [ T ] [ C ] 04:58, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] eMule Notes
It just occurred to me that eMule distribution could actually come to a standstill even if 20 people were uploading a wikipedia file. I don't know where this would go, and I'm positive distribution over the ED2K network will never stop for us, but there is a situation. In eMule, you can be firewalled, or some random NAT problem--which usually stems from having a router. IF every person were to have this problem, who wanted a wikipedia file, no one would ever connect to anyone for the file. Note: This is just for eMule.
Let me explain, when you're firewalled in a Bit torrent client, your downloads will be slower than someone's who isn't firewalled, but you will still receive files. On the ED2K network, if you're firewalled, you are given a "Low ID" status, and if you're not, you're given a "High ID". Now here is the problem: Low ID's can not connect to other Low ID's, only to High ID's. High ID's can connect to whomever they want to. Now with eMule, there are two networks you are connected to, the KAD network and the ED2K. Here is when you are Firewalled for the KAD network, when this happens, the globe at the bottom right will have a yellow arrow corresponding to the KAD network and the connection info will tell you that you are firewalled. Now, with the ED2K network, when you are firewalled, you will be labeled "Low ID" and firewalled, and the globe arrow which corresponds to the ED2K network will be yellow. When you are downloading, the uploader you are downloading from will see a (Low ID) status next to your wait time. IF you are a High ID person, then there will be no status. Finally, when you are High ID and not firewalled/have a NAT problem, then the yellow arrows will become Blu-ish/Green-ish. Even if you're firewalled, it will still say you're connected next to the globe--because you are. Here is a perfect situation.
Sorry for the image quality, google doesn't like png so it converts them to a terrible jpg compressed picture. Nominaladversary 22:49, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Questions? I might need to explain again.
[edit] Status
I'm guessing this is how the torrent project will be. We have seeders for the files on the BitTorrent side and Uploaders on the ED2K side. We're dormant and running...until a situation arises, which hopefully won't happen until the next release. Everyone who uploads/seeds uses plenty of bandwith up, so thanks for that. Nominaladversary 02:39, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- Update - the BitTorrent Inc. site doesn't seem to have our torrent any more, all off Trapper's stuff isn't there...which site should we make the main torrent download? Nominaladversary 03:18, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] About that front page
The two torrents for WPCD 0.5? What is up with that, who else uploaded a torrent for the same file....the ISO does take precedence, but they're both ISO's...two torrents are great if they're both going strong (in case on fails), but we need 1 to be strong first. Anyone wanna shed some light? Maybe I missed something. Nominaladversary 03:42, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
