Viana do castello
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Viana do Castello is a small city situated in the very north of Portugal. The city is a charming example of historic Portugal and during the 17th century was a base for English Merchants exporting local agricultural produce including 'duoro' wines. Later that century the English moved base to Oporto establishing the now famous base for 'Port wine'.
Today Viana boasts a lively centre and cultural programme throughout the year. The city is situated on the atlantic coast and boasts an immense beach which through virtue of some strong winds is popular with surfers and watersports enthusiasts of all kinds. Quite a number of campsites line the beach south of the city.
The city straddles the river Duoro and the central road/rail bridge into the centre was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The nearest airports are Oporto (40 minutes drive to the south) and Vigo (a 60 minute drive north over the national border into Spain).
