Viborg municipality

Viborg municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Viborg County on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 313 km², and has a total population of 44,743 (Maj 2006). Its mayor is Johannes Stensgaard, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Viborg.
Neighboring municipalities are Bjerringbro and Tjele to the east, Møldrup and Skive to the north, Fjends to the west, and Karup and Kjellerup to the south.
By January 1, 2007 Viborg municipality will, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), be merged with Bjerringbro, Fjends, Karup, Møldrup, and Tjele municipalities to form an enlarged Viborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 1,390 km² and a total population of 88,945 (2005). The municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
