Victorian Opera (Melbourne)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In November 2005, it was announced that the State of Victoria would support the establishment of a Victorian Opera Company under the musical direction of Richard Gill.
Performances will be held in a variety of venues in Melbourne and regional Victoria, with an initial season taking place in the second half of 2006.
The predecessor 'Victoria State Opera' existed as a separate organization under the musical direction of Richard Divall OBE from 1981-96 (following an earlier company 'Victorian Opera Company' or VOC in the same line of descent) until it was forcibly merged with The Australian Opera to form Opera Australia in 1996. From that time, seven or eight opera performances per season were staged in Melbourne by Opera Australia.
[edit] First Production - "Noye's Fludde"
The first production of the new company will be Noye's Fludde, which will be performed by the Victorian Youth Opera, a subsidiary company of Victorian Opera. The production will be staged from June 30th-July 2nd, 2006. The orchestra will be made up of 25 young musicians, from Melbourne High School and Blackburn High School, with Nicholas Carter as conductor, who is a member of the Victorian Opera Young Artists' Development Program.
The production will be a collaboration with the Victorian College of the Arts' School of Production. Students from the school will design and crew the production, which will be staged in Space 28 at the VCA. In total, 130 young people are involved with the production.
