The Vietnam War (1959-1975) direct and indirect casualties breakdown as follows:
Contents |
[edit] North Vietnam
North Vietnamese Army, National Front for the Liberation of Vietnam
- ~ 600,000 died and ~600,000 WIA. According to classified informations by the Vietnamese government in the late-1990's, as well as the admission of the Vietnamese government officials who participated in the war, the actual number is much higher than previously admitted by the Vietnamese communist government. In the documentary aired by The History Channel in the early 2000's, numerous Vietnamese officials confirmed the latest number from the declassified information during interviews, and the North Vietnamese casualty is around 1.1 million, including 300,000 missing in action. However, the non-combat related death is greater than MIA & KIA combined, as a result of disease (malaria was the major cause) and non-combat related accidents (such as falling, drowning, and snake bites). The number of POWs was uncertain, because during the war, defections were common. The number of wounded was also uncertain because many fighters were wounded multiple times and it was difficult to track by keeping historical records especially for the communist forces in southern Vietnam.
