I don't get why it is a problem mentioning that Villanova University is in the Villanova area in Radnor Township.
"Villanova" is not an incorporated municipality. "Radnor Township" is and it provides fire service, etc.
In addition the Radnor Township article already mentioned that the university is within the township limits. Why not mention that here? WhisperToMe 00:02, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

Now what is wrong with indicating Radnor Township in the "location" bar? That, and the Terri Schiavo timeline uses "township" (Terri_Schiavo_timeline) so why can't we? WhisperToMe 04:19, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- Township names are not unique, even within a state, especially in states created from the Northwest Ordinance. -Howardjp 12:17, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- Of course not - That's why the county is indicated with them, e.g. "Springfield Township, Delaware County". Does that make it worse in any way? I don't get it. (And Radnor Township is the only "Radnor Township" in the state of Pennsylvania, and the fact that Pennsylvania is mentioned there kinda drives home the point that it is in PA.) Also, Radnor Township is the only Radnor Township in the U.S. In addition to that, the Terri Schiavo example is the only Lower Moreland Township in PA and the U.S. WhisperToMe 17:59, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Fr Peter took office on June 1st - although his formal inauguration is not until Sept 8th. Father Dobbin is no longer Father President so I changed the infobox to reflect this. Not sure of the June 1 vs Sept 8th point is relevant but I will let some other alum take care of that.

I wholeheartedly agree that the University is prestigious. It is. There is prestige coming out of VU's ass. However, we cannot OUTRIGHT SAY that. It violates Wikipedia's WP:NPOV policy. It reeks of opinion. The rest of the article, stating the accolades and honors won by VU, will convey the fact that Villanova is a prestigious University. Let the University stand on its own two feet. We don't need to help it stand. -- MusicMaker5376 03:22, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
Are we somehow challenging Business Week's integrity, suggesting that Villanova is ranked that high in their magazine due to their subscription agreement, with that comment after the ranking information?
[edit] Campus Myths and 9/11 Attendant
Two things, first the campus myths section could be expanded, and possibly include some sort of outside source (surely the campus newspaper has mentioned some of these myths, if they're truly popular among students). It's no doubt an interesting topic. Additionally, is the 9/11 flight attendent really a "notable" alum? Thousands of people died on 9/11, are they all worthy of mentioning individually on Wikipedia? Furthermore, no doubt there were likely several Villanova alumni inside the towers and/or pentagon, from a statistical standpoint, why should the flight attendant be singled out? --71.230.240.24 04:09, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Campus Myth section
I find this entire section highly dubious. Villanova was founded under twenty years before the civil war and the enrollment during that time was ~30 men. This makes it highly unlikely any dormitory building at the time (assuming one even existed) could've been used as a hospital, additionally, no building from that era other than the church is still standing on the campus. Furthermore, the closest battle to villanova would've been gettysburg - over a hundred miles away. Moving along, there is no wing or section of st. mary's hall closed off, the entire building is used by students and faculty for residency, dining, and religious services. As for the underground tunnels/catacombs, all facilities the size of villanova have underground maintenance tunnels for pipes and wiring, they are not secret, nor are they full of dead bodies. Any secret passages other than these are not even rumored to exist. --NEMT 22:16, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Alumni Hall is older than the Chapel. Furthermore, Villanova used existing buildings after it was founded. Bell Aire Hall, formerly the Randolph mansion, was used as a campus building until its destruction in a fire. Alumni Hall is now the oldest building on campus, and predates the Civil War.
One more thing, the only haunting myth surrounding villanova I'm aware of regards to use of st. mary's hall as a seminary decades ago, and several suicides amongst young seminary students being reported in the chapel. I am unsure of any truth to these claims, however, the chapel is still open and in use. --NEMT 22:18, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

I will first of all mention that this section is called Campus Myths, and whether they are true or not is irrelevant–the only important thing is that they are indeed spread around campus.
The building which is often cited as being the hospital is Alumni hall, the East wing of which was built in 1848[1], and is the oldest building on campus. It was not yet housing at that point. Whether or not it was indeed used as a hospital, I don't know.
As a St. Mary's resident, I will tell you that it is by far one of the creepiest buildings I've ever been in. That there is a wing closed off is a common rumor around campus, and while I've never found one, I've hunted for one with a group of friends before.
The chapel is a different matter. I've heard about a thousand different stories as to who killed themselves where, but I can say that the chapel is not used for any religious function anymore, nor has it been for some time. Some instrumental and vocal groups perform there, but the large, gorgeous, expensive chapel is not used for anything else. Most people here find that slightly fishy.
Also, St. Mary's used to be a convent; the former seminary is Corr hall.—FilthMasterFlex 03:41, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
- Interesting, I had no idea Alumni Hall dated back to that era. I still find it hard to believe it would've been used as a hospital, though, and had never heard any such rumors while I attended Villanova. I too lived in St. Mary's, and while the long dark hallways certainly were creepy, I never noticed any area closed off abnormally (ie: the kitchen was obviously closed off to students, etc). I assumed the chapel was still used for some religious practices, as I frequently saw stuff going on in there, but I guess it could've just been musical performances. I believe the chapel has been deconsecrated due to its lack of use (although rumors abound that perhaps the deconsecration was due to the unpleasant discovery of some unseemly activities....

- Unless they lied to us during Orientation, Alumni Hall was a Civil War hospital.
- I was there 'till '99 or so, and I distinctly recall an entire wing of St. Mary's being closed -- if memory serves, it was the second floor over the gym. The doors were closed and locked up tightly -- the rumor was that a nun had hung herself in that wing. But, it is possible that they have re-opened them in the intervening years.
- Furthermore, at that time, the chapel had NOT been deconsecrated; I was a member of one of those vocal groups, and we were constantly being admonished for swearing up a storm in a functional chapel. AND Student Theater performed a production of Rumors in there where one of the actors danced on the altar, thinking that it was deconsecrated, and they were almost banned from campus.... While I was there, the Red Mass was held there every year. I don't remember what the Red Mass is, but it wasn't a general campus activity: something involving only the religious community. I'm pretty sure, too, that it's frequently used over the summer during a large Augustinian pow-wow -- I worked summers for the Summer Music Program, and I remember having to wait until the Auggies cleared out before we could move in. There was talk when I was there about deconsecrating it and moving it firmly under the auspicies of Music Activities, but Campus Ministry didn't seem too gung-ho on the idea, their only reasoning being the Red Mass. They may have deconsecrated it since then, but I doubt it.

- Wow. But I did just read this sentence: "It should be noted that the tunnels people often heard of are in fact a series of steam tunnels that run under the west campus from the furthest apartment-style dorm to the lowest basement of St. Mary's," which is patently untrue. I was there when they were building those apartments, and they definitely did not dig any tunnels to St. Mary's. — MusicMaker 08:30, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Was Villanova really the Pelicans, or is this vandalism from St. Joe's (PA)?
I don't know for sure, but I suspect it's true. A biography of St. Thomas of Villanova, the patron of the university's church, was titled "The Pelican." See here. Dppowell 05:21, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
