I started a bit of a cleanup of the present text, such as it is, but if someone wants a resources to work from to add some meat to this bone of an article, this article might be a good place to start: http://www.balancedreading.com/vocabulary.html
The 10,000 word figure seems too low, probably someone's guess and not based on any research, and any number average must increase over a person's lifetime, so if it is a correct average, it should be linked to an age range. --Fuhghettaboutit 04:20, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
