Voyage of Slaves is the third novel in Brian Jacques' Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series. It was released on September 14, 2006 in the US and September 13, 2006 in the UK.
Adrift in the Mediterranean Sea, Ben and his loyal dog Ned—cursed by an avenging angel to roam the earth forever—fall into the clutches of the Slave Lord Al Misurata. Thus starts a roaring adventure, ranging from the Libyan coast to the Italian border.
Survival is a daily battle over land and sea, as Ben and Ned gain good friends and encounter ruthless enemies in their quest for freedom. At times possessing nothing other than their wits, they must rely on one another to defeat the forces of evil.
Ben is at first seperated from Ned, previously known as Den, when their adrift boat is found by slave traders, who throw Ned overboard, because he is a black dog, which they think is a sign of the Devil. Ben is taken to Al Misurata, while Ned is found by a wandering Troupe that nurses him back to health. Among them is the beautiful Serafina, who sings like an Angel. Ben and Ned are reunited when Al Misurata has the troop preform for him, and Ned has been incorporated into their act. Ben also becomes quite taken with Serafina, who returns the affection. Al Misurata plots to sell the troupe into slavery, under the guise of returning the troupe to Italy. While on his boat, the Sea Djinn, Ben and Ned jump overboard to escape. As they reach land, they meet a young boy being attacked by sharks, they save him, and find out that the boy is the grandson of a Jewish sailor/Warrior, who pledges to help the two in anything they might reuire aid with. They beg to be taken to Italy, where they rescue the Troupe, and take shelter in a convent. Unfortunately, Al Misurata finds them, and in the struggle, Ben is stabbed, and Al Misurata and Serafina fall over the cliff. Neither survived. Ben and Ned flee to the sea to get away from their feelings, and continue their eternal journey.
