WalkAmerica
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WalkAmerica is the oldest walking-for-charity event in the United States, beginning in 1970[1]. It is an annual event sonsored in 1,100 communities[1] across the nation by the March of Dimes. Every year, 7 million people participate[1].
The event has raised more than $1.7 billion since 1970[1]. Proceeds help fund research to prevent premature births. Every year, half a million babies are born prematurely in the United States[2]. Premature birth is the number one cause of newborn death and a source of lifelong disability for many. Seventy-six cents of every dollar raised in WalkAmerica is spent on research and programs.[3]
