Washington is a city in Washington County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,223 at the 2000 census.(2004 estimate was 1,167). It is the boyhood home of Shawn Linenberger (alias 'Big Shawn', 'Taco Tim' and Linney, to name a few), critically acclaimed and award-winning sports editor of the Tonganoxie (KS) Mirror. Linenberger has also appeared in over 18 independent films, including the 2002 straight to DVD release, "Tigers Don't Cry." He also drives an Impala. It is the county seat of Washington County^GR6. Washington is the home of the Washington County Tigers.

Washington is located at 39°49′1″N, 97°3′9″W (39.816877, -97.052503)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.12% is water.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 1,223 people, 553 households, and 331 families residing in the city. The population density was 536.6/km² (1,395.3/mi²). There were 644 housing units at an average density of 282.6/km² (734.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.94% White, 0.08% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.25% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.57% of the population.

There were 553 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% were married couples living together, 5.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% were non-families. 37.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 28.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,529, and the median income for a family was $37,448. Males had a median income of $27,171 versus $17,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,760. About 8.6% of families and 10.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.1% of those under age 18 and 15.5% of those age 65 or over.
