Waurn Ponds, Victoria

Waurn Ponds is a suburb of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. It is a fairly large suburb. It's boundary are Rossack Drive, Prince Highway, The Geelong To Warnambool Railway, Reservior Road, Draytons Road Pigdons Road, Deakin University and Honeys Road. Waurn Ponds is home to the Geelong Homemaker Centre and Deakin University. Although there is a Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre it is not part of the suburb.

[edit] Rail controversy

The Regional Fast Rail project announced an upgrade of the line between Melbourne and Geelong, to Grovedale, which has long required rail transportation to service it's growing population.

It was eventually decided to construct the new terminus on the site of the demolished Marshall station. This decision was controversial, as a significant portion of the local community had demanded that the station be built in Grovedale itself whilst others are pushing for the extension to continue to Waurn Ponds to service student travellers attending nearby Deakin University.

Waurn Ponds is home to the quite small Waurn Ponds Creek. It starts around the barrabool hills region and eventually flows into the barwon river near belmont common. It is low on water and is no more than 1 meter deep in most sections. It has a large weed problem which makes the creek look uninhabitable. The creek is home to species of fish (Many introduced) including Carp, Redfin, Roach, Tench, Australian Grayling and Short finned eels. The creek also is a large habitat of native birds including the pacific black duck. Increase in annual rain will bring the creek back to its original status.
