Weald of Kent Grammar School for Girls
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Weald of Kent is a grammar school for girls aged 11-18. The headteacher is Mrs S A Rowell.
This school is a Language College, a type of specialist school in the UK, where girls are compelled to study French as a second language and have a choice of either German, Japanese or Spanish as a third language. In the sixth form it is possible to study Italian or to start Japanese or Spanish if these were not previously chosen as main subjects; all are taken as FLAW (Foreign Languages at Work) courses, a formal qualification in which the girls are taught how to use their languages in business situations.
Students take their SATs (usually taken in year nine) in year eight, and their French GCSE is also taken a year early. The girls are then able to take French AS-level a year early.
Weald of Kent prides itself on good exam results and recently came 15th in the school league tables.[citation needed]
[edit] Buildings
Weald of Kent is a fairly modern school, and in 2003 a new canteen called 'La Wokerie' was built, run by staff from 'Independent Catering' who provide healthy lunches for the girls every day. In 2006, a new English and Humanities Block was built. It offers larger classrooms, some of which have false walls between two of them which can open up to create one large room.
[edit] Uniform Policy
The uniform at Weald of Kent consists of a 'burgundy' or red jumper made from 100% acrylic, a navy skirt which must be no more than six centimetres above or below the knee, and a white fitted shirt with the school logo on the collar. These items must be purchased from Simmons, which runs a school shop in a locker room on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and must be worn with tights and black sensible shoes. In the summer, a summer dress may be worn, although there have been recent complaints by members of the public that these dresses are too short.
Most students enjoy attending Weald of Kent as it opens the gate to a number of job prospects.[citation needed]
