Werder Zone

Werder is one of nine Zones of the Somali Region in Ethiopia. This zone is named after its largest city, Werder.
Werder is bordered on the south by Gode, on the west by Korahe, on the northwest by Degehabur, and on the northeast and southeast by Somalia.

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, Werder has an estimated total population of 401,993, of whom 221,191 were males and 180,802 were females; 36,824 or 9.2% of its population are urban dwellers. Density figures for this zone are not available.[1]
According to a May 24, 2004 World Bank memorandum, 1% of the inhabitants of Werder have access to electricity, this zone has a road density of 0.0 kilometers per 1000 square kilometers. 28.2% of the population is in non-farm related jobs, compared to the national average of 25% and an average of 28% for pastorial Regions.[2] 13% of all eligible children are enrolled in primary school, and 1% in secondary schools. 100% of the zone is exposed to malaria, and none to Tsetse fly. The memorandum gave this zone a drought risk rating of 788.[3]
