Western Slavonia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Western Slavonia is a geographical region of Croatia called Slavonia. Western Slavonia is notable for its light forests, wide plains and significant agricultural industry. It is defined in its borders by the rivers Drava and Sava.
Major cities in the area are: Požega, Virovitica, Daruvar, Kutina, Novska and Nova Gradiška.
After Croatian independance in 1991, southern parts of the area were under JNA/rebel Serb occupation from 1991 to 1995 during the Croatian War of Independance, when it was liberated in Operation Flash. The area suffered heavily during war and occupation and today has one of the worst unemployment rates in Croatia and struggling industry.
See Slavonia for more details about geography, population, history and economics of the area.
