[edit] THE BEGINNING

In the mid 1980s, a whole slew of new FM radio station allotments were assigned in and near the Greater Lafayette area. One of those open frequencies was located at 106.7 MHz. The winning bidder for that frequency was KVB Broadcasting, lead by Lafayette attourney Kelly Vaughan Busch. At 7am on June 15, 1992, after several setbacks, including finding a location of offices and studios, WGLM went on the air with a full-service adult contemporary format. WGLM would become the first station in nearly a decade to be added to the Lafayette radio spectrum. The station primarily focused on music, but included news, sports, weather, and community updates throughout the day. The station often referred to themselves as "Your Community Radio." In the beginning, WGLM competed with cross-town station, WASK-AM, which featured similar programming. The format was developed and executed by Dan McKay who came from Los Angeles adult contemporary station, KLIT. McKay was initially hired as a consultant, but would later join the station full-time as the station's operations manager/program director.

[edit] THE 90S

WGLM was very successful throughout the 1990s. The station constantly rated very highly with females 25-54, their primary demo at the time, and continued to focus on their "Community Radio" mission. WASK-AM eventually bowed out of the AC/MOR race with WGLM in 1994 when their parent company purchased defunct Adult Album Alternative station, WIIZ licensed to Battle Ground, which went on the air in 1993. WASK and WIIZ (which flipped call letters to WASK-FM) became a simulcast with news/talk programming.

[edit] WGLM GOES 'BRIGHTER'

WGLM ran unopposed more or less for a couple years and did very well until heritage top 40 station, WAZY, flipped to hot adult contemporary, a more upbeat version of the format WGLM was running. Ratings for all persons 12+ for WGLM took a hit from WAZY's new format, however, they still remained strong with 25-54 women, according to Arbitron. Despite this, competition between WAZY-FM and WGLM became very stiff, and in 2000, WGLM dropped the "Community Radio" moniker in favor of "The Best Mix of Music" and brought new imaging to the station. WGLM dropped the syndicated Delilah program as well and segued to a 'brighter' adult contemporary format to go head-to-head against WAZY-FM. By the time the fall Arbitron period rolled around, WGLM began adding rhythmic crossover records to its evening and overnight programming, but the station remained "at-work friendly" during the primetime 6am-7pm hours. Ratings remained stable, which forced competitor WAZY-FM to drop their hot adult contemporary format in favor of adult contemporary in the fall of 2000.

[edit] ADULT CONTEMPORARY TAKE TWO

2001 was a year of major changes in Lafayette radio and for WGLM. Long time competitor WAZY, which flipped to adult contemporary the previous fall, went back to Top 40 in March 2001 and RadioWorks' newly acquired oldies station, WNJY Delphi, moved their tower into rural northeastern Tippecanoe county and flipped to Top 40 as WXXB, The New B 102.9. This made three top 40 or top 40-leaning stations in the market. As a result of this and a very poor rating period, WGLM decided to return to their adult contemporary roots. Soft Rock 106.7 signed on the air in February 2002. Jones Radio Networks syndicated night show, Delilah, returned to nights and the theme weekends, which had been a staple on the station from the beginning, were dropped. A few months later, WGLM's program director, Dan McKay, was released from the station. Midday DJ and music director, Keith Austin, would take over PD duties with station owner Kelly Busch and sales manager Ron Schuessler serving as the musical consultants. The second attempt at mainstream adult contemporary wasn't quite as popular as before and ratings continued to slide. The plug was pulled on Soft Rock 106.7 in late September 2004. With the program director position and the programming department eliminated as the station launched a move to satellite programming, Austin was released.

[edit] CURRENT FORMAT & LINEUP

WGLM is now known as The Mix 106.7 playing the "Best Mix of the 80s, 90s, and Today." The Mix also features "Anything Goes Weekends" beginning Friday at 10am and running through Sunday.
