[edit] History
As the former sister station of WHJB-AM (now WKHB), WGSM-FM was originally WHJB-FM, then WOKU-FM Adult Contemporary, Heavy Metal, Country, and WSSZ-FM Top 40 Hot Hits! Z-107 in the late 80s to 1991 (the "SSZ" is the sound of the sizzling Hot Hits) before switching to classic rock Classic Hits Z-107 in July of 1991. All were licensed to Greensburg, but became a simulcast of WAMO-FM in 1996 to cover the eastern part of the metro Pittsburgh market. The simulcast was initiated as part of a sale of the FM station to Sheridan Broadcasting that year, and the AM to another owner.
In 2003 WSSZ became a simulcast of WAMO (AM) after the 106.7 signal moved its tower and improved its coverage. In 2004, it acquired the WJJJ calls, and changed its name to "Majic 107.1," but the programming remained the same.
On January 30, 2006 Sheridan sold WJJJ to The St. Pier Group LLC, who immediately flipped the station from Urban Adult Contemporary to Variety Hits, using Westwood One's "SAM" satellite format. They also decided to target the Westmoreland County area by planning to move the studios and offices back to Greensburg.
The WJJJ call letters were previously used for a smooth jazz format on the 104.7 frequency, and for a "Jammin' Oldies" format, also on that frequency. Today, 104.7 is WPGB.
