Whip-Smart is the second album by American singer-songwriter Liz Phair, released in 1994. (See 1994 in music). After the massive critical rection of Phair's debut album, 1993's Exile In Guyville, the release of the album was accompanied by a commercial blitz. Despite the strength of the first single "Supernova" on the rock charts, the album received mixed reviews and never reached the levels of success banked on by Matador. Although it reached a strong debut at #27, Phair's highest chart position to date (albeit matched by her self-titled effort of 2003), the album only achieved gold status.
Phair has stated that the songs on Whip Smart chronicle the beginning, middle and end of a relationship: "a rock fairy tale...from meeting the guy, falling for him, getting him and not getting him, going through the disillusionment period, saying, 'Fuck it,' and leaving, coming back to it." [1]
