[edit] Gameplay
As the game begins you take control of Eddie Valliant, with the framed Roger Rabbit cartoon character always following you. You must wander around an urban city of Hollywood entering various buildings, and caves in order to speak with people, some of whom are from the film, and pick up various items left on the ground and inside drawers and chests in order to find out who framed Roger Rabbit. The second half of the game takes you into the infamous Toontown with more buildings and caves to explore in an effort to find Marvin Acme's lost will, and prepare for a battle with the neferious Judge Doom.
Beyond the challenge in locating items scattered throughout the various locations in the game, you must watch out for enemies that will deplete your life force or kidnap Roger Rabbit and end the game. Eagles will randomly swoop down and attempt to grab Roger Rabbit, if the Toon Patrol kidnaps Roger you only hope is to correctly answer their riddles and then escape while they are laughing. You also must face various enemies, some of which can not be killed, such as bottomless pits, snakes, rats, dogs, and walking cartoon shoes.
Unlike the movie, where the climax is set in Hollywood's Acme Warehouse, the final battle with Judge Doom takes place in a similar building in Toontown called Doom's Warehouse, guarded by the Weasel known as Stupid. The situation is basically the same, however (Eddie must fight Doom and prevent Roger and Jessica from being dipped).
There are an assortment of weapons that you can find or buy, and a password feature to save your progress. Benny the Cab can become your venue of transportation, and most of the major settings from the film are recreated in the Nintendo version of the game.
[edit] Jessica's Phone Number
Inside the Ink & Paint Club, initially talking to Jessica Rabbit gives you the response "Find my Phone No. and give me a call". Indeed, if you search the leftmost table in the club you will find a 1-800 toll-free phone number. Dialing this number would play a recorded message of Jessica giving tips for the game, such as the importance of carrying food to distract stray animals and the method of getting Stupid the Weasel to leave his post at Doom's Warehouse (throwing a baseball). This number has long since been disconnected, although it now seems to connect to an adult oriented phone service.
[edit] Computer Version
In 1988 Who Framed Roger Rabbit was released for the Amiga, Apple IIGS, Commodore 64, and DOS by Buena Vista Software. The game's format is different from the NES version in that you control Roger Rabbit through four levels, each with its own specific task to complete.
The first level is a race-car type game between Roger Rabbit, driving Benny The Cab and the Toon Patrol. The second level is in the Ink & Paint Club as Roger must run around the nightclub's tables collecting the various pieces of paper that the penguin waiters set down, without getting kicked out because of the pieces of paper are Marvin Acme's will. The third level is another racing scenario and the final level involves you doing various gags in the Acme factory to kill the Weasels and save your wife, Jessica.
