Wigmore is a new estate situated on the outskirts of Luton near to Luton Airport. Although it had a few residential houses in the 60s, extensive development only began in the 1970s and now it has a population of several thousand. The estate has proven to be popular and the local amenities have grown to keep pace with the needs of the community.
Nearby are many beautiful Bedfordshire villages such as Tea Green and Cockernhoe with typical quaint country pubs which can transport you back to a time before the hustle and bustle of modern times which has been accelerated with the expansion of Luton Airport.
The southernmost part of Wigmore is closest to the airport, and there was originally talk of having to demolish some homes here in order to allow for the expansion of the runways. However, this seems unlikely now as the most popular plan at present is to build another runway to the south of the existing one. Some homes to the south of Wigmore may experience occasional aircraft noise, but as it is not on the flightpath, this only tends to be taxiing noise and so is not as intrusive as it is for people in the village of Breachwood Green.
Wigmore also houses Luton's ASDA supermarket. This is one of the smallest ASDAs in the country, and the carpark is always overflowing as it is not only used by Luton residents, but also people from all of the villages around the east and south of the town. However, there are apparently plans to extend it in front of where the tills currently are, which should bring some relief. It also has a petrol station which regularly has among the cheapest priced petrol in the area.
[edit] Politics
Wigmore is represented by Cllr Peter Chapman (Liberal Democrats), Cllr Roy Davies (Liberal Democrats) and Cllr Henry Siederer (Liberal Democrats).
