[edit] Why put a userbox gallery on your userspace?
Either of two reasons.
- To give a home to userboxes you have created yourself. (Category:Original Wikipedian userboxes is intended for this.)
- To implement the German solution by archiving existing userboxes on a given theme. (Category:Themed Wikipedian userboxes is intended for this.)
By placing your archive in the more suitable subcategory, and by not duplicating boxes already archived by someone else, you are probably being helpful and considerate to people who are browsing the range of available userboxes.
In the past, people shared userboxes by creating templates in template space, but this should no longer be done.
[edit] How to put a userbox gallery on your userspace
You may share userboxes in either of two ways: (1) display the code or (2) create a template on your userspace. Here is a quick comparison of the two options:
Option | Display the code: | Template on your userspace: |
---|---|---|
Method | To put your userbox on their page, a user copies code such as this:
{{Userbox | border-c = red | id-c = red | info-c = lightgreen | id = DEMO<br> | info = <center>This userbox is just a demonstration.</center> }} |
First, create a subpage on your userspace (let's say it's called User:Yourusername/Demobox), then put the userbox code on that page. Now, to put your userbox on their page, a user simply copies this:
{{User:Yourusername/Demobox}} |
Advantage | Transparency: the user can see exactly what the userbox does, and knows if it will do anything they might not want such as automatically placing the user into a category. | Conciseness: the user only has to copy a little bit of text, and can therefore keep their userpage tidier. |
Note: If creating a userspace template, please subst: the userbox constructor template, thus avoiding a template inside a template. It may not be policy to do this, but there is a view that it's a good idea and it may be best to play on the safe side here.

This navigation template also is available to add to your userbox directory.
