Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories/uncategorized
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a task force for Wikipedians dedicated to categorizing articles that are uncategorized. If you enjoy eliminating links from Category:Category needed, then join this organized effort to make every article on Wikipedia belong to a category.

[edit] Tasks
[edit] Current task
Clear Category:Uncategorized from February 2007. The objective is to clear the category entirely before the end of April so that the backlog stays under 3 months old. As of April 8, nearly 46% of the backlog has been cleared already. Come on over and help out!!! (In all fairness, this is partly due to the creation of the subcategory Category:Uncategorized stubs from February 2007 but hey, let's stay positive)
[edit] Alternative task
A page that needs to be worked on, preferably sooner than later /previous-April. It is a list of articles that used to belong to a category but are now uncategorized. Mostly this is the result of vandalism so fixing these should be a priority since the absence of the cat indicates potentially more serious problems. Help is certainly appreciated.
[edit] Hints and tips
[edit] General
- In order to help people find this project, consider using an edit summary like the following: Categorizing article - You can help!
- Use the most specific category you can find and remember that an article can often be placed in multiple categories.
- Look at similar articles to see what categories are available.
- Often, one of the first internal links will lead to an article that's in a category (or categories) appropriate for the article you are trying to categorize. For example, if the first sentence of the article is X is a letter of the alphabet, then click either "letter" or "alphabet" (or both, if necessary), and see what category (or categories) the article falls under. Then, determine whether it is indeed an appropriate category for the article you're concerned about (keeping in mind that an even more specific category may be available; in the example given above, this would be necessary), and add the category to the article.
- When in doubt, use a temporary higher-level category, and try to leave a message on the article's talk page so that future editors can refine the categorization.
- Stub and maintenance categories are considered only "temporary" categories; stubbed articles should be included in non-stub categories as well.
- It is not considered necessary to add the uncategorized template to stub-sorted articles, but neither is it forbidden to do so. It's preferable to simply add a category instead. Alternatively, add uncategorizedstub or uncatstub, to enable prioritisation of categorisation effort between entirely uncategorised articles, and those with sorted stub types.
[edit] Check validity of articles
- Check if the article qualifies for speedy deletion/prod/afd/merge/redirect, nominate if appropriate
- If suspicious, check for possible copyright violation
- Help other editors working on the backlog by categorizing articles even if you nominate or propose them for deletion.
[edit] Biography articles
- If the first name is not the surname: use
-
- Remember to use the birth/death/living categories for articles about people, e.g.:
-
-
-
[edit] Special tools
- Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser, recommended time saver.
