[edit] Basics of the project
[edit]
Title
WikiProject on the History of Bangladesh
By definition the land of Bangladesh prior to 1971 was known as East Pakistan and East Bengal; was a part of Bengal Presidency, Bengal, and Suba Bangal; and, was a collection of small lands like Vanga, Gauda and Pundra. This project will encompass all of these identities, some of which overlap with History of India, History of Pakistan and History of the Commonwealth.
[edit]
Goals and Scope
The aim of this project is to standardize, improve and monitor articles related to History of Bangladesh, as well as to create missing articles, especially after the Independence of Bangladesh in 1971. The scope of the project also applies to History of Bengal articles.
If a historical person's/ dynasty's/ state's name is not unique, please, create a disambiguation page for the name.
You can begin by contributing to the following periods of history of Bangladesh (including separate subsections or even separate articles): (1) Pre-historic Bangladesh; (2) Hindu-Buddhist period; (3) Muslim period; (4) Colonial period; (5) Pakistani period; (6) Independent Bangladesh.
[edit]
The War of Liberation
The biggest event in Bangladesh history, the Liberation War, needs particular attention. It needs a complete timeline, plenty images (preferably with use permission from copyright holders), much better work on 1971 Bangladesh atrocities (including Operation Searchlight) and Mukti Bahini (including separate entries for the sectors and forces outside the Niomita Bahini), a complete list of Recipients of Bangladeshi military awards in 1971 (preferably separate biographies for all the recipients) and more. The categorization system needs much work as well.

Article standards |
Neutral point of view |
Working with others |
- See also: Wikipedia:Manual of Style and Wikipedia:List of policies
The goal of Wikipedia is to become a complete, accurate encyclopedia. attribution (which implies verifiability and no original research), notability and a neutral point of view are important tools to achieve accuracy, so it is strongly recommended to check facts.
In historical articles, the past tense is strongly advised. While history can be written in the present tense, the general audience of Wikipedia will usually expect the past tense on historical subjects and events that occurred in the past. The present tense in English is only correctly used to describe past events in a work of fiction. This is referred to as the "historical past tense".
Remain objective as possible. The point and ideal of Wikipedia is to create an encyclopedic neutral body of knowledge. Avoid using the first-person point of view (emphasising the facts; not the editor). Explain the evidence (from the links and references) and explain the reasons of any conclusions.
Remember, Wikipedia is not about just writing whatever is true (See: Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not), it is about writing whatever can be verified as truth. See Wikipedia:Attribution for the policy of attribution, Wikipedia:Citing sources for why we cite sources, and Wikipedia:Citation templates for ways of citing sources properly.

[edit] Don't over-categorize
Having added an article to, say, Category:Massacres in Bangladesh, there's no need to also add that article to Category:War crimes in Bangladesh, Category:Bangladesh Liberation War, Category:History of Bangladesh or Category:Bangladesh. The category hierarchy expresses the fact that every article about Massacres in Bangladesh is an article about War crimes in Bangladesh and an article Bangladesh Liberation War.
[edit] Open tasks
[edit] The most important task
Place the WikiProject History of Bangladesh banner on the DISCUSSION (aka "TALK") PAGE of every History of Bangladesh and History of Bengal related entry. Here is how to do this:
A list of all pages currently with this banner can be found at Category:WikiProject History of Bangladesh articles. |

- Any member of the Biography WikiProject is free to add—or change—the rating of an article.
- What if I don't agree with a rating?
- You can list it in the section for assessment requests below, and someone will take a look at it. Alternately, you can ask any member of the project to rate the article again.
- Aren't the ratings subjective?
- Yes, they are, but it's the best system we've been able to devise; if you have a better idea, please don't hesitate to let us know!
If you have any other questions not listed here, please feel free to ask them on the discussion page for this department.
[edit] Adding images
You can contribute greatly by uploading relevant free or public domain and especially self created images to Wikimedia commons.
[edit] The To Do List
[edit] Adopt an article
- For an extensive list of articles pertaining to WP:HoB see Category:WikiProject History of Bangladesh articles
Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.
- Example article: User:Example
[edit] Participants
Please feel free to add yourself here, and to indicate any areas of particular interest.
- Aditya Kabir (Particularly interested in the History of Dhaka)
- Usingha
- Ragib
- Arman Aziz
- Niaz bd
- Dwaipayan
- Tarif
[edit] Recruitment
A way of recruitment could be posting requests to join on user talk pages. The best places to begin may be:
- Category:Bangladeshi Wikipedians
- Category:Bangla speaking Wikipedians
- Category:Wikipedians interested in history
The following note could be posted to potential participants' talk page:
== WikiProject History of Bangladesh == WikiProject History of Bangladesh has started. It needs members and participants. (Sign with four tildes)
Or, you could paste the following template to potential participants' page - {{WP:HoB invite|~~~~}}. It would look something like:
[edit] Articles
[edit] New articles
The path to a Featured Article |
---|
Please feel free to list your new History of Bangladesh or History of Bengal related articles here (newer articles at the top, please). Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them should be suggested for the Did you know? box on the Main Page.
[edit] Collaboration and review
[edit] Templates
Articles that are within the scope of this project are listed in Category:WikiProject History of Bangladesh articles. Place this WikiProject notice - {{WP Bangladesh|history=yes}} - at the top of an article's Talk page to direct editors to the Wikiproject History of India for guidelines.
- Note
- Place any templates used by or applicable to the project here.
- You may find that a talk page assessment template may be more useful to you than a stub template (see Category:WikiProject banners and Wikipedia:WikiProject Templates for more information)
[edit] Stubs
Use the template - {{Bangladesh-hist-stub}} - on appropriate article stubs.
- Note
- New stub templates should be proposed before creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals.
[edit] Historical biographies
Use the biography standardized historical biography infobox - {{Infobox Biography}} - on articles related people in Bangladesh history. This infobox may be added by pasting the template as shown below into an article.
{{Infobox Biography | subject_name = | image_name = | image_size = | image_caption = | date_of_birth = | place_of_birth = | date_of_death = | place_of_death = | occupation = | spouse = | parents = | children = }}
[edit] Particpants
You may add the userbox - {{User WikiProject History of Bangladesh}} - to your userpage to declare yourself a participant. It will add you to Category:WikiProject Bangladesh Members. The userbox would look like:
![]() |
|
[edit] Coordination page header
This template will show on the top of any WikiProject History of Bangladesh coordination page tagged with {{WP:HoB Header}}. It should go only on cordination pages of the project, not on articles or talk pages of articles.
[edit] Barnstar
To award a participant with a barnstar you may make use of - {{subst:The Epic Barnstar|message ~~~~}}. It would look something like:
![]() |
The Epic Barnstar | |
I award this barnstar for your outstanding contribution to Bangladesh history aticle. Bangladeshi Historian 19:27, 11 March 2007 (UTC) |
