[edit] Article Structure
[edit] Text
[edit] Opening sentence
The opening sentence should be no more than 50 words in length. It should then go on to the contents box then it will continue the article.
[edit] Headings
Headings should be used on start of sections, for example History. If a heading is required in a section, use a sub-heading. There should be a maximum of five headings.
[edit] Sub-headings
A maximum of eleven sub-headings should be in an article. If there are more, please reformat the article to include more sections.
[edit] Body text
The article text should be written in a formal tone. As many wikilinks as possible should be used. A maximum of two wikilinks per article link a section maximum.
[edit] Images
An article should have at least one image to make it complete. You can upload as many free images as you want to Wikipedia Commons. In general, images should always come from the commons but sometimes this is not possible.
- Station articles
- There should be at least one exterior image for each existing underground/DLR station article, and at most three.
- The main image used in the infobox should be an exterior station image. (See Info box heading below.)
- Interior image(s) showing any notable or distinguishable aspect(s) of the station are desirable, but be careful not to go to excess with these. A maximum of three is sufficient.
- In the case of long articles, the above images can be distributed at appropriate points throughout the article. In short articles, any additional images should be posted as a mini-gallery in the bottom left position, below the main article but above the LUL box and any 'See also' or 'Reference' sections containing links. See Southgate for an example of this.
- Rolling Stock articles
- It is compulsory to have at least one exterior (3quarter view) and interior (full car length (any car)) image for rolling stock (from 1938) articles.
[edit] Captions
All images (with the exception of the main infobox image) should have explanatory captions. Captions should be a maximum of 20 words in length. They should always end in a full stop (.).
[edit] Roundels
These are used to represent the mode of transport (MOT) that a paragraph or news article is refering to. They can also be used for decorative purposes but this use is fraund upon. There are currently two series in use. Only two widths should used when presenting the roundels - 50px or 70px. 70px should always be used in the portal when representing news articles.
[edit] 2tone series
These are no longer used but are kept for history purposes and for use on archive articles from the portal, also sometimes used for other purposes.
[edit] Silver series
The silver series was launched on March 22nd 2007 when TfLs website was relaunched. Improvements over the last series includes:
- They are all the same dimentions so they will look better when stacked.
- They have a silver backing design which makes them more modern and matches the new portal colour sceme. Yet they still meet TfLs roundel design standards.
- They now only represent modes instead of lines to make it easier to pick one for a article.
The British Transport Police roundel should only be used with safty notices and news directly related to the BTP.
[edit] Diagrams
If needed, diagrams can be included in an article to explain something better.
[edit] Disused Stations
To help the visitor understand where a location of a disused station is please include a section of the tube map with the disused station added in.
- Where possible, include also an exterior image of any now-closed or disused station, or similar image (eg official plaque, brickwork mural, etc) showing evidence of its location.
[edit] Copyright notice
The full official Tube map and related maps are not permitted for use on Wikipedia as they are copyright TfL. Sections of the map are permitted as fair use when describing to the visitor where a disused station is.
[edit] Security Notice
For security reasons, you cannot take pictures in London Underground stations with Flash operational. This is because it may distract the driver or set off the fire alarm system. Tripods and related devices are also not permitted because of the cramped nature of the underground, people may trip over them. If you do the stated act then you are liable to be arrested by the British Transport Police.
[edit] Info boxes
All lines and stations should have their own info box. Information can be found on old tube maps and on the internet.
- All station infoboxes should contain an exterior image of (one of) the station entrance(s), scaled to about 300-310px (to fit the box).
- All stations with disabled access should be tagged with
{{access icon}}
after the station name to display. For clarity, a space between the name and the icon is needed.
All rolling stock articles should have their own infobox (as London Underground 1967 Stock).

[edit] Collaboration
![]() |
The current London Transport Collaboration of the month is "London Underground 1992 Stock". To nominate or vote for an article visit the collaboration page. |
The Underground Collaboration of the Month is a collaborative effort to improve Underground-related articles, in order to help them reach featured-article standards. Anyone, no matter what their level of knowledge about London's metro systems, is welcome to lend a hand. Each month, an article is chosen by people interested in the topic, and for the next month the chosen article is worked on, under Wikipedia's principle of collaborative editing. This provides a single article for people to concentrate their efforts on collaboratively.
[edit] Assessment
Article assessment is the process by which Underground related articles are sorted into different qualities. Assessment is done through the assessment page.
[edit] Requests
Peer review London Underground
[edit] Things to be standardised
All our our different types of articles need to be standardised. There are basically two types of articles - Lines and Stations. Overview articles (such as London Underground) do not need to be standardised as they are classed as 'one-in' articles, which means one of a kind. Standardisation improves the look of the articles and help visitors understand the concept of the article.
Please use these templates to as a guide to standardise our articles.
