[edit] Title
WikiProject on Roller Coasters
[edit] Scope
The ultimate goal of this WikiProject is to make Wikipedia into a BETTER roller coaster reference than the Roller Coaster Database. In order to accomplish this goal, Wikipedia will need:
- An article on every standing roller coaster in the world (as well as significant ones that are no longer standing), which should meet these standards:
- A standard title.
- A standard intro. Most roller coaster articles should begin like this:
(coaster name) is a (wooden or steel) roller coaster located at (park name) in (park location).
Other important information (such as current records) should come immediately after this intro. - A stat sheet, which should (if possible) be accompanied by a picture that best shows what the coaster has to offer. There should ideally be a train in this picture.
- Basic facts and trivia about the coaster, such as location, records held (past and present), events (such as accidents and major malfunctions) appearances in fiction etc. etc... just about anything you want.
- A "walkthrough" of the coaster, a listing of all the elements. These should (except for very simple ones such as hills) ALWAYS be linked, if there is no article on a particular element, create it! The location of the camera should be included if the coaster has one.
- A template linking to all the other roller coasters in the park, listed alphabetically.
- Articles on everything related to roller coasters. This includes, for a start, types of coasters, elements, and manufacturers.
- Articles on coaster elements should use (coaster element), NOT (roller coaster) in the title!

[edit] Tasks
[edit] Adding to the "Big List"
The "Big List" can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Roller Coasters/List of roller coasters by RCDB ID and is intended to be a comprehensive list of coaster articles have been created, and more importantly, of those that have NOT been created. Instructions for adding coasters to the list can be found there.
[edit] Stub making
There are many, many roller coasters out there that have no article on Wikipedia yet. All you need to do to start an article on a coaster is...
- gather the basic facts and stats (Roller Coaster DataBase is a fantastic resource for this)
- Create the article with the proper title according to the Article Naming Standards.
- Copy and paste the following into the article:
<!--(article text goes here)--> <!--(park template goes here, if one exists for the park where the coaster is located)--> ride-stub
The "rcdb_number" parameter is the NUMBER in the URL (not the full URL) of the coaster's entry at the Roller Coaster Database. For example, Kingda Ka's RCDB page is http://www.rcdb.com/id2832.htm so the RCDB Number for Kingda Ka is 2832. It's an optional parameter, but should always be used.
This template will put any page on which it is included into Category:Roller coasters. - Enter the stats, leave any parameters that you don't have entries for blank.
- Write the rest of the article!
- Put RollerCoasterProject and Location (where "Location" is the city and state where the park is located) at the top of the article's talk page.
[edit] Photography
No coaster article is complete without a picture. The primary picture - the one at the top of the stat sheet - should best illustrate what the coaster has to offer. This could be a featured element (such as the inverted loops of Dueling Dragons), the lift hill and first drop if none of the elements really stand out, or even the entire coaster. This picture should include a train if possible. If the coaster holds (or has held) any records, they should be reflected in the picture if possible.
Other pictures, such as close-ups of the trains, the ride entrance, the station etc. are also greatly appreciated. If the coaster has a test seat, a picture of it should be included. In this picture, the test seat's restraint should be in the highest allowable position (in other words, if the person in the test seat can't push/pull it down at least this far, they can't ride), and the picture should be taken from an angle where the restraint's position can clearly be seen.
If every interested Wikipedian simply goes to their nearest amusement park and takes good pictures of all the coasters there, we'll definitely have enough pictures... as long as enough people contribute!
[edit] Standardization
- Moving articles to the proper titles, see Article Naming Standards
- Adding the infobox to articles, especially those using the old subst'd stat sheet (which should no longer be used).
[edit] GET OUT THERE AND RIDE THE COASTERS!!!
This is THE way to write great articles on coasters. Go to the park, ride all the coasters, take great pictures of them, talk to the operators, and whatever else you can think of - all with the goal of improving each coaster's article. Anyone can (and is encouraged to) create and improve articles on coasters they've never ridden, but it takes someone who has ridden a coaster, and most importantly, is enthusiastic about it, to turn a stub into a good coaster article.
[edit] Adopt an article
Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

[edit] Article Naming Standards
It will normally be necessary to search for a coaster on the Roller Coaster Database in order to determine the correct article title. Follow this guide based on what you find:
- One coaster of that name found, name is unambiguous: Title should simply be "Coaster Name". Example: Kingda Ka
- One coaster of that name found, name is ambiguous (could refer to something other than the coaster): Title should be "Coaster Name (roller coaster)". Example: Patriot (roller coaster)
- Optionally, also create a redirect to the article at "Coaster Name (rollercoaster)".
- Multiple coasters of that name found, but they are all "clones" of the same coaster: Write one article covering all the installations of that coaster, using one of the above standards depending on name ambiguity. Example: Batman: The Ride
- Multiple distinct coasters of that name found: Title should be "Coaster Name (Park Name)". Example: Corkscrew (Cedar Point)
- Also, in this case, create a disambiguation page, or if it exists, link to the new article on it (see below).
[edit] Disambiguation pages
It will be necessary to create a disambiguation page when there are multiple distinct coasters that share the same name. This page should be titled the same way as a coaster article: "Coaster Name" if the name could only refer to the coaster, or "Coaster Name (roller coaster)" if it could refer to something else. It should not be titled "Coaster Name (disambiguation)". It should follow this layout:
There are multiple roller coasters named Coaster Name: *Coaster Name at Park Name <!--repeat this line for each coaster--> disambig
However, if there is already a disambiguation page at either "Coaster Name" or "Coaster Name (disambiguation)" for non-coaster related uses of that name, simply add the coaster-related disambiguation entries to a "Roller coasters" section on the existing disambiguation page. We don't want one disambiguation page to link to another. In this case, "Coaster Name (roller coaster)" should redirect to the coaster section on the disambiguation page.
Example: Cobra (disambiguation)#Roller coasters
Also, this should be placed at the top of each coaster article linked to on the disambiguation page:
other roller coasters named Coaster Name
[edit] Templates
[edit] Stat Sheet
[edit] Single-track
This template will add any article using it to Category:Roller coasters. Copy and paste into an article and add values for each parameter. PLEASE read the parameter documentation on the template page, as this template uses a good deal of auto-categorization and unit conversions and requires specific values for most of its parameters. If these features are not desired for a particular case, use instead.

[edit] Dual-track
Infobox dual roller coaster is for coasters with two tracks, with separate parameters for each.
{{Infobox dual roller coaster |name= <!--The name of the entire coaster.--> |image= |caption= |location= <!--Must not be linked, will auto-categorize the coaster.--> |section= <!--Must not be linked.--> |type= <!--Must be "Steel" or "Wood", nothing else. Must not be linked.--> |type2= <!--Must not be linked, will auto-categorize the coaster.--> |type3= <!--Must not be linked, will auto-categorize the coaster.--> |status= |opened= |manufacturer= <!--Must not be linked, will auto-categorize the coaster.--> |designer= |model= |track= |lift= |name1= <!--Name of the left track.--> |name2= <!--Name of the right track.--> |height1= <!--Must be expressed in feet and may contain only numeric characters.--> |height2= <!--Must be expressed in feet and may contain only numeric characters.--> |drop1= <!--Must be expressed in feet and may contain only numeric characters.--> |drop2= <!--Must be expressed in feet and may contain only numeric characters.--> |length1= <!--Must be expressed in feet and may contain only numeric characters.--> |length2= <!--Must be expressed in feet and may contain only numeric characters.--> |speed1= <!--Must be expressed in miles per hour and may contain only numeric characters.--> |speed2= <!--Must be expressed in miles per hour and may contain only numeric characters.--> |inversions1= |inversions2= |duration1= |duration2= |angle1= <!--Do not include "degrees", it is added automatically.--> |angle2= <!--Do not include "degrees", it is added automatically.--> |acceleration1= |acceleration2= |gforce1= |gforce2= |capacity= <!--Total capacity of both sides--> |cost= |restriction= <!--Must be expressed in inches and may contain only numeric characters.--> |rcdb_number= <!--The number in the URL of the coaster's RCDB page--> }}
[edit] No automation
is Infobox roller coaster without any of the automation (except placing the article in Category:Roller coasters). It should be used for articles that cover multiple installations of a widely-cloned coaster such as Batman: The Ride

[edit] Stub templates
- ride-stub
- and the associated stub category Category:Amusement ride stubs
[edit] Park templates
These templates link to all of the roller coasters in a park, listed alphabetically. They should be placed in the park's article as well as each of the coaster articles for that park. Coasters that appear in more than one park (such as Batman: The Ride) should have a park template for each park they appear in, but ONLY if all instances of that coaster are IDENTICAL. If you have created a park template, please list it here using TemplateName.
If a park is part of a larger complex, for example the four parks of Walt Disney World or the two of Universal Orlando Resort, one template can be used for the entire complex.

[edit] Categorization
Categorization is now done automatically by the infobox. It will add any page including it to these categories, as long as the appropriate parameters are filled out correctly:
- Roller coasters
- Park Category
- Manufacturer Category
- Primary (wood or steel) and secondary type categories
- Height category (Hyper, Giga, Strata)
Other categories, such as Category:Notable roller coasters should be added if appropriate.
All type category pages (but not manufacturer category pages) should be placed into Category:Roller coasters.
Articles about types of roller coasters and roller coaster elements should be placed into Types of roller coasters and Roller coaster elements, respectively.
[edit] Lists
- Notable roller coasters: Not intended to be a complete list of every coaster, but strictly those that are unique, notable, first, or record-breaking.
- Category:Roller coasters: can be used as a list of coasters, as every Wiki coaster article should point here anyway.
