The Maps task force creates and maintains system and route maps for use on road transport related articles, and is responsible for creating and maintaining a standard appearance for road related maps. Any state is welcome here.

• Come to a consensus on a standard Wikipedia road map style
• Identify articles about routes that lack maps
• Identify articles that need updated maps or maps more specific to a previous time period
• Identify and categorize existing historical road maps
• Consider using expanded U.S. Road/Interstate/U.S. Highway/State WikiProject template parameters to organize article statuses, similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains. This point will be discussed on the talk page.

Try to stick to the following standards when creating maps:

• Upload all maps in SVG format if possible; otherwise, PNG format is equally acceptable.

[edit] Fonts

• Use of the existing Interstate SVG shields (as well as state highway SVG shields, if available) is highly advised.
• If you choose to use other shields, use the Roadgeek 2005 Fonts.

[edit] Colors

• Background: #F7F7ED (tan). Solid color.
• Limited Access Highways: #77AAFF (blue). Toll road coloring of #008000 (green) is optional.
• U.S. Routes and State Highways: #FFDD88 (orange).
• All other roads shown: #9C9C9C (gray).
• Road highlighting: #FF0000 (red).
• Water: Continental view or regional, water fill should be white (#FFFFFF). Local view, light blue (#BEE8FF).

• Limited Access Highways: 3x
• U.S. Routes: 2x
• State Highways and Other Roads: 1x
• Road Highlighted: 3x for Limited Access, 2x otherwise

[edit] Borders

• The only borders required are state borders, which should be a grey color (#9C9C9C). The width of the stroke should be 1.5x for a localized view, and 1x for a regional/continental view.

• Maps for infoboxes should be a proportion of around 290x172. A few pixels off isn't a big deal, but keep the ratio near 1.7:1.
• Maps outside the infobox are fair game as far as size would be concerned.

[edit] Expressway/freeway features

• Interchanges: a white circle, with a nearby green box with the interchange number (as presented on the talk page), for close-up and medium range maps. Large-scale: omit.
• Toll barriers: a black line perpendicular to the path of the road for close-up and medium range maps. Large-scale: omit.

• Maps will use an implied legend of the above; if there is any deviation, a legend should be included on the map to prevent confusion.
