Sir William Robert Grove (1811 – 1896) was a British chemist born in Swansea in Wales. In 1839, William Robert Grove developed the first fuel cell (which he called the gas voltaic battery), which produced electrical energy by combining hydrogen and oxygen. Grove developed another form of electric cell, the Grove cell, which used zinc and platinum electrodes exposed to two acids and separated by a porous ceramic pot.
