William Staite Murray

William Staite Murray, British studio potter (1881–1962)
William Staite Murray was born in Deptford London. He attended pottery classes at Camberwell College of Arts from 1909 - 1912 and set up his own pottery in Rotherhithe London in the premises of his brother's engineering and foundry works in 1919.
He was appointed Head of Ceramics at The Royal College of Art London in 1926.[1] He believed pottery was a fine art medium, with the same importance as painting and sculpture.[2]
He ceased potting at the commencement of the war in 1939 and lived in Rhodesia where he was appointed Trustee of National Arts Council.
