"Window Paine" was a track on Smashing Pumpkins' 1991 debut record, Gish. It was originally released a month before the album as the B-side to the record's third single, Siva. "Window Paine" is also believed to be a reference to LSD, which Billy Corgan allegedly took regularly during the Gish period. The song, one of the most atmospheric pieces in the band's oeuvre, rests for nearly three minutes on two chords before exploding into a blistering jam session built around the D-major scale. The song was covered live by the Pumpkins' contemporaries Pearl Jam seven times during 91/92.
Jimmy Chamberlain has stated the band initially attempted to record the song along with a click track, but the song quickly took on a different feel. An organic process Corgan referred to as "flow-arranging" was used instead. The same process was notably used on many tracks such as "Set the Ray to Jerry" and "Shame".
