[edit] Character
Winthrop is a shy, withdrawn boy because of the death of his father; he has no friends with the exception of his older sister, Marian Paroo. He is noted for having a prominent lisp and gets teased about it by his neighbor Amaryllis, who actually likes him. When con man Harold Hill comes to town, he befriends Winthrop and engages in such activities as taking Winthrop fishing and promising to teach him how to play the cornet. When Winthrop learns that Harold has been lying to him, he feels betrayed until the end of the production, when Harold leads Winthrop in the River City Boys Band.
