WMEB is a radio station in Orono, Maine. The college radio station of the University of Maine, WMEB has been in operation since the early 1960's. At the beginning it was WORO and was a campus-only radio station. It became an official radio station in January 1964 when the FCC allowed the station to operate on the frequency of 91.9 FM, and it's callsign became WMEB-FM.

Originally broadcasting between 4pm and 10pm, it was a "mix of music, news, and informational programming." It remained this way throughout most of the 60's. Into the 70's however, the station became more progressive rock based as more and more artists were releasing on vinyl. There was still a place for news and public service announcements, but by the 80's, WMEB had joined many of the other college radio stations in helping little known bands make it onto the charts. Throughout the 80's WMEB gained a reputation of being one of the top college radio stations in the country (citation needed).
