[edit] Goal of WPSL
The goal of the WPSL is to promote and develop women's soccer at the highest level. Since the folding of the WUSA many former professional players are on WPSL rosters.
[edit] Expansion and Contraction
For the 2006 WPSL Season, a wave of expansion was undertaken, adding teams in Delaware, Virginia, Florida, Colorado, California, Missouri, New York, and New Jersey.
[edit] 2006 Season
F.C. Indiana entered the 2006 season as defending champions, having defeated host New England Mutiny in the 2005 semifinals and California Storm (featuring internationals Brandi Chastain and Sissi) in the 2005 finals.
The 2006 season ended with the WPSL National Championship, hosted by the Utah Spiders, on July 29-30, 2006. Due to the geographic imbalance of the league, there were varied qualifying methods for the four places in the Championships:

- Midwest Conference champ River Cities Futbol Club defeated South Conference champ Tampa Bay Elite 3-1.
- West Conference runner-up San Diego WFC SeaLions defeated Southwest Conference champ Denver Diamonds 1-0.
- The East Conference's 4-team tournament results:
- North Division champ Adirondack Lynx defeated South Division runner-up Northampton Laurels F.C. 3-2.
- North Division runner-up Long Island Fury defeated South Division champ Atlantic City Diablos 2-1.
- Long Island Fury defeated Adirondack Lynx 2-0.
