WPMI is the NBC television affiliate for Mobile, Alabama. It first started serving the Mobile area in 1981 as Alabama's first independent station. In 1987, the station dropped its independent status and became a FOX affiliate.
[edit] History
WPMI was the first television station that was owned by Clear Channel Communications, better known to the public for its extensive radio interests, purchased, in 1988.
On January 1, 1996, the FOX and NBC networks switched stations in the market: WALA became a FOX station, and WPMI became an NBC station.
On November 16, 2006, Clear Channel announced its intention to sell off all of its television stations, including WPMI, after being bought by an investment group.
During the week of March 14, 2007, WPMI fired the three lead anchors for the weekday evening broadcasts. Peter Albrecht, Drexel Gilbert, and Kim McCrea were the three that were dismissed.
Al.com reports that WPMI has hired former KMTV anchor Greg Peterson to replace one of the vacant evening anchor positions. Raquel Eatman, a reporter from KTVT in Dallas has been hired to fill the other vacant position. She will start in late April.
