Founded in 1996 by Kevyn Douglas Hay, Written In Ashes is a rock/darkwave/gothic band from Portland, Oregon. Their distinctive blend of drums, guitar, bass, synthesizers and complex orchestration has consistently impressed audiences— both in recordings and in their energetic live performance which includes intricately edited video for most every song. Crossing many boundaries, they have proven to appeal to many audiences and have rarely failed to impress even the staunchest of critics
Their first recording "Eternal" was released in 1997 and hailed as "the new sound of Gothic." This was followed by the releases of "Eclipse" in 1999 and "Epiphany" in 2000. There have been tertiary appearances on compliations such as Cleopatra Records' "Unquiet Grave, Volume 1" in 1999 and Ankhor Records' Alice Cooper Tribute "Mutations" in 2002. The band reemerged in 2004 on nationally distributed Latex Records with the strongest material to date with its self-titled release "Written In Ashes".
The band's current line-up contains founding member Kevyn Douglas Hay along with stage and studio veterans, Damon Law of theStark and sexwithsarah, Christopher Hyde of Grindstone, and T.J. Hamilton of The Dead Stars on Hollywood, and The Gentry.
Written in Ashes has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Faith and the Muse, Gitane Demone, Floater, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Switchblade Symphony, Audra, The Crüxshadows, Belle Morte, Seraphim Shock, Voltaire, Collide, and Impotent Sea Snakes.
The band released the EP "Life" in Fall 2006 during their tour of Southern California, playing Dave Bats' legendary Release The Bats party in Long Beach, the next night having a fabulous return to Hollwood Blvd. with a show at Bar Sinister. The "Life" EP features the single "Life" as well as many club-friendly remixes done by the band members themselves. The "Life" EP also contains the song "You", and two remixes. The "Life" EP has been getting consistent air play on Portland, Oregon commercial alternative radio station 94.7 KNRK.
