WVOL
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WVOL is a historically-black AM radio station which broadcasts on a frequency of 1470 kHz in Nashville, Tennessee. The station is technically licensed to the Nashville suburb of Berry Hill, Tennessee. It uses the monicker "The Mighty 147" and describes itself as "your heritage station".
WVOL was an early pioneer in the broadcasting of soul music. With the growth of FM radio, the station went into somewhat of a decline, but never totally lost its core audience, primarily consisting of older African-Americans, but with a considerable white listenership as well.
In the late 1990s, WVOL was purchased by John Heidelberg, an African-American entrepreneur who was a former employee of WSM, and who was the first person to employ Oprah Winfrey as a broadcaster. He has programmed the station with a mixture of classic soul, gospel, and black-oriented talk shows.
The callsign derivation is from Tennessee, the "VOLunteer State".
