Clark devolops the power of X-ray vision. At first he has no control over this new power, it comes randomly and with varying effects. It manifests itself most dramatically during gym class when he and Pete are climbing ropes. Clark sees beneath Pete's skin and falls to the mat.

Meanwhile, Lex seemingly robs a bank. It turns out that Lex is innocent and that the real robber is Tina Grier, a kryptonite enhanced changeling and Smallville High student who can take on the appearance and emotional traits of anyone. Tina had a childhood bone disorder and kryptonite was used to "cure" her.

Tina has been obsessed with Lana since childhood and tries get Lana to allow her to move in with her and her aunt. When Tina accidentally kills her mother and is rejected by Lana, she decides to kill and then take over Lana's life.

Tina entombs Lana in a cemetery but Clark's x-ray vision allows him to see Tina's irradiated bones. He uses this to defeat Tina and rescue Lana.
