Yarraville is an inner-western suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Maribyrnong. Formerly a working-class suburb, in recent years it has experienced rapid gentrification due to its proximity to the Melbourne city centre.
Yarraville lies immediately north of the West Gate Bridge, and immediately west of its namesake, the Yarra River.
Its centre possesses a unique village atmosphere, with an increasing number of fashionable cafes and boutiques. This village atmosphere is anchored by the restored Sun Theatre and the adjacent Sun bookshop. Notable examples of Edwardian and Victorian architecture can be found in Yarraville.
Yarraville is home to one of Australia's most historic and enduring bands, the Footscray-Yarraville City Band. The city band was formed in 1888 when its ranks bristled with European musicians who arrived in Australia's first large migrant wave. The pressures of the late 1890s depression forced the original group to disband, however it reformed in 1902. As of 2006, the band is a compilation of smaller bands from the western suburbs.
Yarraville was the backdrop of the 2000 feature film The Wog Boy, and was mentioned in Spotswood.
[edit] Transportation
Yarraville railway station is a suburban train station located in the centre of the village area. Bus routes servicing Yarraville include the 223, 408, 409, 429, 430, and 472 routes.
