Yongding

Yongding is a county in Fujian Province, China. It is the home of many Hakka families. Yongding has about 400K populations, among them, more then 99% are Hakka, with the rest being Minnan people.
Yongding county is at the Fujian and Guangdong broader. To the south of county lies Dapu county of Guangdong province. The other neighboring counties are all in Fujian: Shanghang county to the west, Longyan city to the north, and Nanjing county to the east. Both Dapu and Shanghang are Hakka counties. But Xinluo and Nanjing are predominately Minnan.
Yongding is the home of many famous Tu lou.
Yongding is about 2500 square kilometers (1000 square miles) in area. Like other region of Fujian province, Yongding is 八山一水一分田 (80% hills/mountains, 10% water/river, 10% field). Two major rivers run through the county: 永定河 (Yongding River),下洋溪 (Xiayang creek), both are tributaries of 汀江 (the name while in Fujian territory) or 韩江 (the name in Guangdong province). Located in sub-tropical area, with Taiphoon patroning area and thus very generous annual parcipatation: about 1200 to 1500 mm per year. As a result, the hydro power is abundant. There are numerous hydro plants in the county, one notable one is the provincial level Mianhuatan Hydroelectric Power Station. The plant has a water storage capacity of 2.035 billion cubic meters, and is able to generate 1.52 billion kilowatt hours of electricity a year. The Mianhuatan hydrodam is greatly contributing to rapidly growing economy in Fujian and the neigboring Guangdong province.
In agiculture, rice is the main crop for the county. Most lower land field can yield two rice crops per year, while in high land field, because of the earlier frost, only one harvest can be assued.
Yongding is an important tobaco producer. The cultivation of tobaco started in WanLi era of Ming Dynasity. Yongding was honored as 考烟之乡 in the early 20 century. Its significance has declined in recent years, Yongding is still one of the most important tobaco production area in the region. Many top brand Chinese cigaratts contain tobaco produced in Yongding.
Yongding has rich natual deposit. The most notable one is the coal. Most coal produced in the county is shipped to Guangdong province, where the economic growth creats a huge demand for energy. The transportation of coal has created a huge demand of heavy trucks. As a result, Yongding is said to be among the counties with most trucks.
