At the beginning of the game the player can choose one of three weapons: a staff, a sword or a shield which allow the player to specialize in one area of Sora's attributes. These weapons, however, cannot be used by the player beyond the beginning sequence.
Throughout the most of the rest of the game Sora wields a strange weapon called a Keyblade. Given to the player near the beginning of the game, it appears to be a large, oversized gold and silver key, but can change appearance with the appliance of Keychains which are given after the completion of certain tasks. Different Keychains have different effects, usually raising or lowering certain attributes. Defaultly, Sora uses the Kingdom Keychain. Notable Keychains include Oathkeeper(also Kairi's lucky charm), Kingdom Keychain and the Way to Dawn. As the chosen wielder of the Keyblade or Keyblade master, Sora is able to use the Keyblade to attack, cast magic, lock and unlock various objects and transport the Keyblade.
As the player progresses more is learnt about the Keyblade and its connection with the Keyblade master. According to legend during a time of great chaos and unrest, a person is chosen to become the wielder of the legendary Keyblade and either save the world or destroy it. The wielder is chosen by the Keyblade because of their great strength of heart and decency. Sora is the current Keyblade master but other people, most notably Riku and King Mickey are able to wield one. The legend also states that before there were multiple Keyblade masters.
Donald and Goofy are the only computer-characters whose weapons may be changed by the player. Other computer controlled characters can only wield one weapon which cannot be changed. Each character can only use one type of weapon, a staff for Donald and a shield for Goofy but different weapons may be obtained and used by the player.
