The Zlaté Piesky (literally Golden Sands) is a lake and a summer resort in north-eastern part of Bratislava, Slovakia, near the D1 motorway. It should not be confused with the Golden Sands resort in Varna, Bulgaria.
[edit] Characteristics
The water area stretches 400 metres, with the depth reaching 30 metres. The lake and the surrounding area is the largest recreational and sporting region in Bratislava. On its northern shore, there is a major tent camp called Intercamp, several restaurants and there is a major shopping centre within walking distance.
Visitors can enjoy different sports at the resort—swimming, volleyball, streetball, mini-golf, tennis and others.
[edit] The 1976 Tragedy
On 28 July 1976, Zlaté Piesky witnessed the most tragic airplane crash in the history of Czechoslovakia. A Czechoslovak Airlines airplane on the way from Prague to Bratislava failed to land at the nearby airport and crashed into the lake. Seventy passengers and six crew died and only four injured passengers were pulled from the aircraft, of whom two later died in the hospital.
