[edit] Ethnicity
Deborah carty deu is not of white colombian ancestry. Why is zuleyka ethnicity left out of her article?????
What is her ethnicity? She seems to have a very mixed background. Carioca 04:00, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well, considering she's from Puerto Rico, I think she will have a diverse background. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.115.212.184 (talk • contribs) .
She is latinia or a mix of white people from spain and the natives that used to live on the island same with mexico but i am not totataly sure there is an article about that somewhere in wikipedia, oh here it is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mestizo
Zuleyka is a Mulatto she is part black and white
yes but shes also a mix of the natives that used to live on the island she is either mestizo or mulatto/mestizo but i am sure she is not mulatto if you read purto rico history it says spain invade the tino indians and other tribes that lived on the islands in the 1700s so that most likly makes her a mestizo or a mulatto/mestizo
Zuleyka is probably mulatto/mestizo but she is most definitely not mestizo
Zuleyka's Paternal grandparents are black
Unless they're mixed or something comparable to creole, none of Zuleyka's grandparents can be 100% black. Have you seen pics of her parents and her little brothers? Her dad is dark skined but not black. That said, know that I don't claim to be an expert on this type of stuff. It's all very complicated; you can't just look at someone and know for sure what their ethnicity, or racial background is. Anyways, my point is, please excuse my ignorance on this subject.
Zulekya's grandparents were on local WXTV in New York where she joined them. Her grandmother in fact said that she was happy that Zuleyka not only represented the island and PR women, but also the fact that she was the first Miss Universe from PR of color. It doesnt take a genealogist, scientist, etc.. to figure out that she is mixed heritage. She is the only winner of mixed heritage. Ignorance is to deny that she isn't. Whoever wrote that comment on my page is clearly blind. Also, make sure to sign your entry. --XLR8TION 21:24, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

- I just removed the statement about her ethnicity because it doesn't make any sense. It states that: "She is also the first winner from Puerto Rico of mixed racial heritage". The reason that the statement is innacurrate is that close to everyone in Puerto Rico is of mixed racial heritage. I've live d here all my life and i havent met one person who is of 'pure heritage' in Puerto Rico.Nnfolz 08:42, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- To contradict those of her mixed heritage, it is clear and simple to see that she is the first Miss Universe of predominately Non-European heritage. For those who know anything about immigration to the island during the late 1800s, there was heavy Spanish immigration to was very strong. When Alba Reyes was elected Miss Puerto Rico a few years ago she was highly touted in the media as being the first "Non-White} (hence "European") Miss Puerto Rico ever. The overall racial features on the former candidates are very evident. In the last census (2000) 85% of the population identify themselves as "white". Let's not let ignorance take over this conversation. --XLR8TION 21:59, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Picture
Can someone please put in a photo of her as Miss Universe asap? There should be one on the official Miss Universe website pretty soon... another source might be Yahoo which often publishes photos released by MUO (fair use, obviously). (no internet credit=unable to put it up myself) -- PageantUpdater • talk | contribs | esperanza 04:41, 24 July 2006 (UTC) is there a higer resoultion picture of her in the pagent?
Back to ethnicity Puerto Rican's are a mixture of many races including African which were brought to the island as slaves, Spaniards & the Taino indians who were decimated within the first few hundred years of colonization by Spain. There is also influence from French & German immigrants & inhabitants from other neighboring Caribbean islands. The people of Puerto Rico come from such a diverse background that even in one family when combined in one room are different colors, a reflection of that diversity.
The above comment is not true. That is truly ignorant. There are many ethnic enclaves on the island such as Loiza, Coamo, etc.. where racial mixing is not common. Not every PR is of mixed heritage. Thatw ould be ignorant to say. However Zuleyka is of mixed ancestry and her grandmother was proud of this as they interviewed her (with Zuleyka present) on WXTV-Univsion 41 in New York the day after the pageant.--XLR8TION 21:29, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Article title - which name to use?
This appears to be another one of those tricky situations whether it is unclear whether she will be known as Zuleyka Rivera or Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza. What should we go with? -- PageantUpdater • talk | contribs | esperanza 05:29, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- I prefer Zuleyka Rivera, as it is the way she is being called at the Miss Universe official website. Carioca 05:35, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- I think we should use both last names. It is her legal name and it is the name that was used during the televised pageant. Plus, just because someone calls you by a shorter versioin of your name it doesn't mean that that is your nameCjrs 79 15:21, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Puerto Rico a 'Nation'?
I am by no means an expert on the proper nomenclature or status of Puerto Rico; however, Puerto Rico is certainly not a sovereign nation. It is a US territory with commonwealth status. How then can it be considered a 'nation' which implies its own sovereignty?--24.55.46.163 05:47, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- It's tricky. I used state (as in nation-state) but its hard because you need a term that encompasses all the states/nations/countries that compete at the pageant. -- PageantUpdater • talk | contribs | esperanza 05:53, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
- I was taught that "nation," unlike "state," does not necessarily imply sovereignty, although the terms are frequently used interchangably. If I am not mistaken, it is correct to call Puerto Rico a nation, as the people share a common national identity (i.e. language, origins, religion for the most part, etc.); however, it would be wrong to refer to it as "sovereign" or call it a "state" (in the U.S. sense or the more general sense). -Elmer Clark 06:01, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

-
- Hmmnn...I agree that it doesn't seem appropriate to claim Puerto Rico's victory as a US victory. It might be most appropriate to refer to Puerto Rico as the second winningest participant in the history of the pageant.--24.55.46.163 06:02, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Biografía en español
Si es representante de la nación puertorriqueña, su biografía debería estar en español ¿no?
-
- This is english wikipedia. All articles here will be written in the english language, another thing is for sure, looks like english wikipedia is more concerned about Puerto Rico's issues than spanish wikipedia.-- Puerto.rico 19:07, July 25 2006 (EST)
[edit] Wording
As the article Miss Universe 2006 relates to the pageant as an event, not as a title, it is not exactly correct to say she won Miss Universe 2006 (and in pageant terminology - yes there is such a thing - most people wouldn't word it that way anyway, they'd say "won the Miss Universe 2006" pageant etc) - but I get what you're trying to do so have fixed it in a way that I think compromises our two approaches :) -- PageantUpdater • talk | contribs | esperanza 05:53, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Peruvian?
This video claims that Zuleyka Rivera is Peruvian but represented Puerto Rico. -- Lancini87 20:26, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Undergone plastic surgery?
Well, this link claims so: http://criticalbeauty.com/MU_Telecast_2006.html it is up to a consensus (and of course, whether some other sources can verify the claim) to include this in the article. --Joey80 13:47, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- Here's another article link i found http://www.missosology.org/missuniverse06/focus4misspuertorico06.html talking about her willingness to undergo surgery before her Ms. Universe participation. this article is also quite interesting since it talks about her fear of the English language, which makes sense out of her decision to answer the final question and interview in Spanish during the pageant, despite the fact that she has undergone intensive English speaking classes after winning her national title. --Joey80 13:59, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
I would take the validity of both those sources with a grain of salt. They are clearly very biased and their intent is to insult Zuleyka Rivera, who is the deserving winner of Miss Universe, I dont care what anyone says! There is article floating around the net where she states that she has not undergone plastic surgery. Honestly, I dont understand why everyone is so hateful towards this girl. If she looked "plastic" during the competition it's because of her makeup artist who did a dreadful job! I saw her on Live with Regis & Kelly and thought she looked gorgeous! So makeup cleary played a role in her "fake" appearrance on Sunday. If you look at pics taken of her since winning, she looks very natural and like I said before: GORGEOUS!! Anyways, I also read an article that explains her weight loss. Apparently, the MUO served alot of Mexican and Italian foods during the course of the two weeks. Apparently Zuleyka wasn't used to the spicy foods so she wasn't able to eat so much. She loss something like 8-10 lbs. I also read that her nutritionists told her to eat 6 times a day but only none fat foods. I'm pretty sure that she'll gain the weight back during the couse of her reign. I really wish people would get over their bitterness. She's won and there's nothing you or anyone else can do about it. No one is even giving her a chance which is really saddening.
I currently can't find those articles I spoke of. The one about her denying plastic surgery was through an interview with the Associated Press. I'll be on the lookout for them!
In one of the links it she also denied that she had plastic surgery so she won without it in the missogly thingy plus she dosen't need it she hot.

[edit] Hatred
Is this sort of hostility normal? I typically don't follow pageants that closely so I'm not used to all the hate that's going on. It just seems a bit out of control to me. Any thoughts?
-
- I'm thinking it's because she was the underdog in the competition, and usually whenever an underdog gets out on top, everyone seems to hate them. Falconleaf 04:05, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
- But for all the talk about pageants being too predictable, wouldn't an underdog victory be a good thing? And how could any Puerto Rican competing in the Miss Universe pageant be considered an "underdog"!

- Not to mention, how wide her mouth became after they announced the winner. It was obnoxious.

You people should be ashamed of yourselves for making fun of a young girl thta you do not know. jeslousy destroys people.
BTW Puerto Rico was never an underdog in this pageant. She was a frontrunner from the beginning!!
[edit] Proof
Are there any sources that support Zuleyka being the youngest (or one of the youngest) woman to be crowned Miss Universe? I know that her age is one of the knocks on her but I think regardless of her age, she will represent her country as well the "universe" very well!
Absolutely -- she is only eighteen, the minimum age for participation in the pageant, and few eighteen year olds have won. -- PageantUpdater • talk | contribs | esperanza 21:08, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Zuleyka in Japan
So Zuleyka has been in Japan for a few days now. However, there's been no word of how the trip is going or how the people there are receiving her. Have any of you heard anything?
[edit] mySpace account
She has one for the fans, just can;t find, but I remember seeing it. Where is it?
Our you sure she has a myspace account
it could be a fake
it isn't fake, it has official stuff on it, and it looked proffessional, it even said "for the fans" on it. it even had lots of Miss universe trademarks on it as well, so it probably might be real.
-
- I dont know about this. I don't think MUO would even go for any of their title holders having a myspace account during her reign unless it was created before she was crowned. If anything, this account is a tribute to Zuleyka or it's someone simply pretending to be her. I doubt its truly Zuleyka though. Also, this "official stuff" could have been stolen off several websites. Have you ever heard of plagiarism?
-
- So clearly you've seen this account. What's the link (if it truly exist)?
-
-
- http://www.myspace.com/salinasmiss
- I think it's an impersonator. Myspace is a joke!
-
-
- it said it was official

- I think it's an impersonator. Myspace is a joke!
-
And so we should all believe that the account was created by Zuleyka because the website says its official? Excuse me for being skeptical but that makes no sense at all. We all know the dangers of myspace, and how easy it is for ppl to go on there claiming to be ppl they are not. I'm not gonna believe its her just because there's "official" pictures on the sight. Those so called pictures are posted everywhere on the net. I think we should treat this as a tasteless tribute to our Miss Universe. I don't think its right for someone to be making statements claiming to be Zuleyka...this could potentially be bad news for both Zuleyka Rivera and the MUO. I think the sight should be shut down until there's sufficient proof that Zuleyka herself is the creator.
-
- If you look at the part where books are mentioned, on the left of the page, it's a copy-paste of Amelia Vega's page, Amelia Vega was Miss Dominican Republic, http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=5535043
which puts us in front of the truth: there is one joker doing these so called "official page".196.12.176.1 19:35, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Personal account
Zuleyka has another account that hse had before Miss Universe, however i think this information should be left out
[edit] UMA BLASINI'S (MISS PUERTO RICO 2007) BIRTH NAME
Although Uma Blasini's birthname is not Uma, she has always been know as Uma. That is not just a nickname but rather her stage and artistic name. Before winning the Miss Puerto Rico Pageant she was already famous in Puerto Rico for being a top model and everybody knows her as Uma. When she compited and won the Miss Puerto Rico Pageant she did so under the name Uma and that is the name that she's gonna use when she compites in Miss Universe. If that's the name that everybody knows her for and people will continue to know her as Uma I don't understand why this page should refer to her as Wilma especially since Wilma isn't her birth name either but rather precisely a nickname and shortcut for her birth name Wilmadilis. Are we gonna edit every Wiki article in which a celebrity is mentioned by their artistic name rather than their birthname?
208.59.119.30 22:36, 27 March 2007 (UTC) Dannyton
BOTH times she compited at the Miss Puerto Rico Universe she did so under the name of UMA. If you do a simple google search you will see that. BOTH times, as Miss San Juan in 2005 and as Miss Guayanilla in 2007 she compited under the name Uma. When she won she was immediately introduced as Uma and the cover the three major Puertorican newspapers listed her name as UMA. To dissipate any doubts, Miss PR director, Magaly Febles, formally annouced that Uma will participate at the Miss Universe under that name. I don't understand who are you to say that Miss Puerto Rico are never known by their stage or nickname and why, what you are saying should stand alone with no basis to prove it.
Miss Puerto Rico 1971 (who succeded Marisol Malaret) has always been known as Beba Franco. Barbara Palacios Teyde, Miss Universe 1986, is known, competed, and won the Miss Universe pageant using this name while her real name is Barbara Perez Hernandez. Even if no other beauty queen had done that before that, that doesn't mean that Uma is prevented from doing so. I would like you to cite the source that supports you conclusion that beauty contestans do not use stage names. It is well documented that BOTH TIMES Uma participated in the Miss Puerto Rico Universe, she did so under the name of UMA. Like I previously mentioned, if wikipedia needs to refer to Uma by her birthname that is not Wilma, it would be Wilmadilis. If wikipedia needs to refer to Uma by the name that she's mostly known at that is definitely and very easy to document, UMA. If you do a simple google search you will see that there just as much article listing her as Wilma as there are listing her as Uma but the caveat is that she was also a public figure as a professional volleybal player by the name of Wilma. If you google her, you'll see that there are way more sources referring to her as Uma of a beauty queen that there are naming her Wilma.

[edit] Uma Blasini
Wilma Blasini Perez is already an article on Wikipedia. Further deletion of this internal link will be labeled vandalism. Furthermore, aliases such as those claimed to be used by Marisol Malaret or Barbara Palacios has not, nor will affect how their article is listed on Wikipedia. Aliases should be listed in the biography and not in any internal links that will affect the user from reaching their intended article.--XLR8TION 01:42, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
- I disagree that this is vandalism, the woman is most commonly known as Uma Blasini and should be listed as such. I have suggested a move on the Wilma Blasini Perez page. -- PageantUpdater • talk | contribs | esperanza 01:55, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
This is not vandalism!! If anything what you're doing is vandalism and you just violated the 3 edit rule. That wikipedia article that you're making reference of lists her a Wilmadilis not Wilma. 208.59.119.30 02:18, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Please click on article --->Wilma Blasini Perez. This is a working link/article. Replacing it with Uma Blasini and no article is vandalism. --XLR8TION 02:32, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
