左：半浸水翼具自我穏定能力。當水翼向下沉，浸在水中的面積增加，升力亦增加，把水翼向上抬。反之亦然。故此水翼能自我維持在水面的位置。
右：全浸水翼，升力跟水翼在水中的深淺位置無直接關係，不具自我穏定能力。

Surface-piercing hydrofoil is self-stabilizing: when the hydrofoil gets deeper into the water, more hydrofoil area is under water, lift is increased and the hydrofoil moves upward.
Fully submerged hydrofoil is not self-stabilized. It has no idea where it is with respect to the water surface.
