[edit] History
[edit] First Encounter
Only weeks after the disastrous first contact between the Genii and the Atlantis Expedition, Kolya was commissioned by Chief Cowen to train an elite group of soldiers whose specialty was to perform in reconnaissance missions off-world. Despite Kolya's objections, his team was prematurely thrust into a strike on the city of Atlantis when most of the population had evacuated to avoid a massive hurricane.
Using his people's ties with the Manarians, a culture with a trade agreement with the Atlantis Expedition, to acquire a drunken Athosian's GDO and access codes. Claiming to be wounded Athosians, the strike team composed of more than half a dozen Genii soldiers was allowed access into Atlantis. There, Kolya personally killed two guards, and staked the Genii flag in the command tower.
When Dr. Elizabeth Weir and Dr. Rodney McKay returned to the Gate Room to investigate the incoming "injured", Kolya captured them and tortured McKay until he explained the reason why several scientists remained behind. While Major John Sheppard, who also had remained behind on Atlantis, played cat and mouse with Kolya's strike force, McKay and Weir were forced to do Kolya's bidding. [1] When Genii reinforcements were scheduled to arrive, Sheppard raised the Iris shield when the Stargate activated, killing over fifty men, including Idos, the son of one of Kolya's closest friends.
When McKay admitted to Kolya that his attempts to save the city were not going to work, and that a massive tsunami was about to destroy the city, the Genii strike force, including Kolya, fled through the Stargate. Unwilling to return empty-handed, the Commander attempted to take Dr. Weir hostage, but Sheppard used his P90 to fire a single shot into Kolya's shoulder, thrusting him through the event horizon. McKay's admission that his plan was not going to work was not nearly as bad as it sounded, and channeling lightning through the city was successful at powering the shield. [2]
[edit] Fall from grace
His return to the Genii was not a joyous event. Chief Cowen was quick to punish Kolya, suspending him from further missions for several months. It was only when the Genii were again pitted against the Atlantis team that Kolya was given the chance to settle the score with his nemesis, Sheppard.
As Sheppard, McKay, Aiden Ford and Teyla Emmagan were searching for a Zero Point Module on the planet Dagan, Kolya and some troops ambushed the team and captured them. As several of his team mates were being held hostage, McKay was forced to help Kolya recover the ZPM. Only when the ZPM had been found, Sheppard, Ford and Teyla were able to turn the tables on their captors, beating Kolya and several Genii soldiers into submission. Sheppard spared a defenseless Kolya, but also assuring him that he would not be so forgiving next time. [3]
[edit] Kolya and Chief Radim
During Ladon Radim's takeover of the Genii government, Ladon reported to the Atlantis team that Kolya had gone missing and presumed dead. According to Radim, Kolya was most likely killed by Cowen. [4] However, Radim had not been completely truthful. Instead, Kolya had been planning a coup of his own against Cowen, although he was eventually betrayed by Radim, who carried out the coup himself.
When Kolya captured John Sheppard in order to blackmail Dr. Weir into turning over Ladon Radim to him, he used a captured Wraith to systematically torture and drain Col. Sheppard until he was near death. In demonstration of the Genii's improved ties with the Expedition, Ladon and the new Genii government helped the Atlantis team in tracking down a group of renegades, led by Acastus Kolya, who had abducted John Sheppard. However, as Kolya considered himself the only rightful leader of the Genii and was bent on eventually staging a coup, Radim's help was not only motivated by altruism.
However, Radim's help would later prove to be unnecessary, as Sheppard and the Wraith soon escaped on their own. Although Koyla was able to escape through the Stargate, Sheppard contacted him on a radio and promised that should he ever see Koyla again, he would shoot him on sight. [5]
Kolya reappeared to the Atlantis Expedition several months later, when he lay siege to a small village with a band of mercenaries. As Major Sheppard's team was visiting the village at the time, all of the team members except Sheppard himself were subsequently captured by the commander. It was Kolya's intention to use the Atlantis team as hostages to trade for weapons from Atlantis. However, eventually Sheppard outmaneuvered Kolya and captured the entire mercenary team. When Kolya refused to surrender, Sheppard was forced to kill him in a quick-draw shootout. [6]
