From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I won't go into detail about myself here; I have a personal web site that manages to deal with this feat by itself. However, I am an American, living in the horrible state of Florida; I used to write short-stories (typically science fiction or "speculative fiction"), though I remain unpublished.
On Wikipedia, I am an editor and one of the many administrators who help shape this encyclopedia. On Wikipedia, I mainly focus on articles pertaining to erotica and pornography, as Wikipedia has enough people working on my other interests (science fiction, Battlestar Galactica, etc.) However, in the course of my work, I may step on someone's toes, so if you feel that I've hindered you in some way, please never hesitate to let me know. Even if I don't agree with you, I'll at least tell you why and I'll never sugar-coat it for you.
As for me personally, people have told me that I am something of a workaholic -- all depending on the type of work -- and I am an admitted wikiholic.
As for Wikipedia, I first encountered the English Wikipedia in late 2004 and subsequently began the Battlestar Wiki, a Wikipedia using MediaWiki software for all things related to Battlestar Galactica. I'm pleased to say that Battlestar Wiki is becoming extremely popular and has attracted many people, including those who work on the current series.
I am also starting a wiki on Space: 1999, which can be found here, which is more or less simmering on the backburner. However, if you want to help, you are more than welcome to do so!
[edit] To do list
[edit] High Priority
I will be focusing most of my time into getting four porn-related articles from the proposed Wikipedia 1.0 up to featured article status. The articles that are high priority and are my primary focus are Jenna Jameson, Traci Lords, John Holmes, and Linda Lovelace.
[edit] Medium priority
[edit] Validity of pornographic actress articles
With the help of other Wikipedians, I have developed a proposal for the notability of pornographic actors (or WP:PORN BIO, a sibling of WP:BIO). It is presently undergoing discussion, which people can read here.
Should the performer fail to meet more than one of the above criteria, I usually list the articles for deletion.
I am attempting to chronicle what needs to be done (with to-do's and so forth) on the wikiproject page. Since it is fairly inactive (or at least people aren't using it as they, perhaps, should) I am trying to make it the hub of activity to coordinate the development of biographies on porn stars.
Obviously, these endeavours take time. Therefore any help in them would be appreciated. If you would like to help, go to the porn star Wikiproject page or drop me a line.
[edit] Low priority
[edit] Work on getting my Debian proposal polished
/The "Debian" proposal: This is a proposal based off my "Wiki" thought (see below). Apparently a few people actually read my user page and commented on it. So I decided to work on a formal proposal that I will soon present on the Village Pump. I just need a few more people to chime in.
Anyway, in summary, this proposal states the case for splitting Wikipedia up into three different branches: stable, testing, and unstable. If you want to learn more, just read the proposal.
[edit] Replace female pornographic performer pics with free licensed images
I am presently looking to replace any fair use images for pornographic actresses with those licensed under a copyleft license (such as Creative Commons or the GFDL).
Also, I am presently going through the List of female porn stars. Any stars that don't yet have articles (and meet the criteria above), I create their article. Any stars that will not have articles on Wikipedia, due to failing the above criteria, I de-link them and italicize their bullet entry on that list.
[edit] My contributions
Having contributed to Wikipedia since February 5, 2005, I've pretty much concentrated my work on female porn stars as well as articles about Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. The reason for really concentrating on pornographic actresses is because Wikipedia hasn't truly defined that portion of their offerings in an encyclopedic way. Articles like Jenna Jameson and Linda Lovelace are a good start, though the section really needs work.
Like other responsible Wikipedians, I look for copyright violations ("copyvios") and images that are untagged or improperly tagged. Don't take it personally if I find that the image you uploaded doesn't qualify as fair use or is a blatant copyvio.
[edit] My beliefs and work ethic
I believe...
- that trolls, vandals and even immature people have some sort of place... just not on Wikipedia.
- that vandals are good for indicating articles that may need to be worked on. Instead of simply reverting the edit, I am interested in researching it and determining whether or not I can add any additional value to it.
- in the efficacy of teamwork, trust, time and honesty; if you believe I have made some sort of error, please challenge me on it -- I assume good faith as much as humanly possible.
- that understanding the yin and yang of human existance will broaden the mind. To be stuck on one mind-set is ultimately self-destructive.
- Therefore, once understanding the yin and yang, it brings damning understanding to the saying: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
- that all problems can be solved; the determining factor, however, is the time and effort taken to solve the problem.
- that one should understand that whenever one door closes, others open.
- that one should also understand that religion is the force that shall cause destruction and despair -- not save people from it.
- that the grading system should be eliminated, as it does not factor in the persons ability to retain, improve upon and utliize information -- it is all based on the perspective on one person, group or cabal.
- that I do not need any awards to prove my self worth. My works shall succeed or fail on their own merits.
- that every being has their own unique set of life experiences, education and beliefs, and therefore these factors paint their outlook on all things within their range of understanding.
[edit] Waxing philosophy
- /IFD - My rant on WP:IFD, from someone both sides of the firing line.
- /Article sit-ins - Articles that have been deleted unjustly, in my view, are listed here, along with commentary and views as to why I believe they should have stayed on WP.
[edit] Wiki thoughts... by Joe Beaudoin (with apologies to Jack Handey)
Here's some more of my waxing philosophically about Wikis and how to contribute to them:
- I believe that Wikipedia should follow the Debian system. To those who don't understand it, there should be three tiers of Wikipedia: stable, testing and unstable.
- Unstable would be Wikipedia as it is presently -- editable by all users.
- Testing, where articles would be considered for entry into "stable". This is similar to purgatory, where articles would be vetted through as they undergo revisions and any inaccuracies, POV, and other undesirable attributes would be removed.
- Stable would be Wikipedia, with articles checked for accuracy, verifiability and completeness by peer review. Articles included in stable would be the articles at their best, as of that time.
- Given the ruckus caused by the John Seigenthaler defamation (and that's what it is and he has every right to be incensed), I am not astonished that people are calling for tighter editorial controls. In fact, I am all for abolishing editing access to unregistered users. I am also for editors proving themselves prior to creating new articles. Anarchy never works. Period. There must be accountabilty and structure.
- In my observations, most vandalism edits to already established articles are done by anonymous users or bots accessing Wikipedia remotely and crapflooding articles. Just take a look at articles such as John F. Kennedy or George W. Bush.
- I firmly believe that quality should go before quantity when it concerns contributions. Crap-flooding Wikipedia with stubs and verbose prose is easy; the challenge is to create a good article.
- Fair use media should be used as a last resort. Try to add pictures that you have taken on your own, or convince others to license them so that we can use them on this encyclopedia (or others).
- Wikipedia isn't the only place for assembling knowledge. If you don't like how Wikipedia does something, you can always go out and create your own online encyclopedia. The tools are there -- you just have to use them.
- Work on something that interests you. There's nothing worse than working on something that you absolutely hate. Your hate would only taint the article, not help in its creation.
- Assume good faith whenever possible, because all of us are still learning, even the people who've been around longer than you. And if they believe they know everything, then get a golf club and hit 'em where it hurts.
