Anthony Gardner (born September 19, 1980 in Stafford) is an English football player who currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur as a defender.
Gardner commenced his career in 1999, spending the first five months of the 1998 season at Port Vale where he scored 4 goals in 45 matches for Port Vale. Gardner signed for Tottenham Hotspur in January 2000 as a premature replacement for Sol Campbell where he worked his way up through the reserves before making his substitute debut against Derby County in March 2001, before suffering knee ligament damage at the back end of the season. This ruled him out until December. Gardner scored his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur in a 3-2 victory over local rivals West Ham United in September 2002. He really began to impress during season 2003-04, when he earned his full England debut as cover for Gareth Southgate in March 2004. Since this substitute appearance against Sweden, Gardner has not featured for the England senior team since, due to a foot injury which ruled him out of the 2005 2-game tour of the USA for which he was called up. More recently Gardner has been on the fringes of the 2005-06 Tottenham Hotspur squad and was strongly linked with a £2million January move to Charlton Athletic, the move collapsed due to the African Cup Of Nations calling Noureddine Naybet into action and an injury to club captain Ledley King. Another recent injury to King has led to another opportunity for Gardner to stake his claim in the team. He has impressed in his recent appearances all of which have been very important games for the club.
Gardner has previously represented England at under-21 level, gaining one cap. He has a baby girl with his fiancee Rebecca Downes. He attended Blessed William Howardcatholic high school in Stafford He owns houses in Stafford, Italy and an apartment in Chelsea
